Why aren't I losing Weight?

Hi,
I weigh about 120lbs and I'm having trouble with losing weight... obviously. I've already lost over a stone but for about a month now I haven't been able to lose any more. I haven't put anything on, but it's very frustrating not to see results. Help?
I eat healthily (the occassional bit of chocolate here and there, but it's Easter, right?) and exercise every day, mainly on a treadmill. I also do various exercises to tighten my stomach muscles. I HAVE concidered that it might be because I'm gaining muscle, but I can't see any changes anyway.
Although I've mentioned that I do treat myself, I really do eat healthily and drink nothing but a good amount of water.

What's the problem and how do I go about fixing it? Also; I'm consuming around 1,000 calories a day, is this a suitable amount for my weight? Let me know if I've missed out any important information.

- Thanks.

I'm curious as to how tall you are?

How tall are you and what is your age?

Fill in your height information along with your weight in a BMI calculator (click this one -->) This way you'll know if you should be losing any weight what so ever. Unless you're 4'9" and 120lbs or something of the like, you don't need to.

Also... you shouldn't be going below 1200 Cal a day. The National Institutes of Health (and everyone else) recommends no fewer than that. That's not good. You don't want to starve your body. That always back fires.

I'm 17 and about 5'2" (yes, I'm short). I may not strictly need to lose weight, but I would like a flat stomach. I'm not yet happy with my weight or the way I look :(

Well then you should be thinking about doing toning and muscle developing exercises.

You're body is still changing and at your age it's very common to see more flaws in yourself than are really there.

But you're BMI is 21. That's right in the middle of the normal range for you.

How much weight are you trying to lose?...and does your parents or guardian know that you feel this way about yourself?

I'll have another look at the types of exercises I'm doing. Thanks.
I'm trying to lose another 6-7lbs, I think, which is why it's so frustrating that I can't shift it; it's quite a small amount! Yes, my parents are aware that I'm trying to lose weight, they're not totally in support of it, but I figured that it's me that has to put up with the way that I look, so if I'm not happy it doesn't matter what they're telling me.

I totally agree with Emerald. Ditch the idea to lose weight and concentrate on toning. Julian Micheals has some really good dvds you could try out

Hmm, and you should eat more than 1200 Cal. Don't forget that part. It's more important than changing your exercises.

I know all too well that it's popular and widespread but it's not recommended that you go below 1200 Cal per day and it isn't recommended for you in particular to lose more than 2lbs a week.

Thank you very much for your advise, both of you! :) I'll definitely take it.

If you are trying to gain muscle it is definitely important to eat more than 1000 calories in a day, training and starving the body at the same time is not a good combo. You need to fuel the muscles so they can grow. I believe you would want a high protein diet for best results, but I would check with a dietician first.

If you try to build muscle, it is certainly important to have more than 1000 calories, eat in a day's training and emaciated body, at the same time is not a good combination. You must feed your muscles, so they can grow. I think you have a high protein diet for best results, but I want first to a dietitian.

The attempt to remove another 6-7 pounds, I think that's why it's so frustrating that I can not move, you nogal'n small amount! Yes, I know my parents that I lost weight, I'm not totally in support of it, but I thought I made my way to see if I am not convinced that no matter what I say.

way too low calories

your body is in survival mode. I eat 1500-2000 calories in raw food. I'm never hungry and I'm looking younger and younger. Starving yourself may get you thin, but you will look so old!

All, we all remember the teenage years. I know I do. it was AWFUL. I weighed a whopping 102 lbs. & thought I was "fat" because my hip bones didn't stick out like my friend's did. Ok, so you might not NEED to lose weight to look better than YOU think you look, but at least you're being realistic about the amount of weight you need to lose. If you said 25lbs. or something I'd be worried. Sounds to me like you just need to do some weight lifting (you WILL NOT get bulky, no matter what....unless you take steroids. TRUST!), perhaps do some fun cardio like swimming if you have a pool available (great entire body toner, plus cardio). Watch what you eat. Try to stay off anything processed (not easy), watch the amount of saturated fat in things, add in whole grains, fat free dairy (yoplait yogurt is a lifesaver for me...lots of sugar i know...but it kills the sweet tooth) & lots of fresh fruits & veggies. Keep on drinking that water. Give yourself a month like this. I betcha anything if you HONESTLY stick to it & eat right 95% of the time...you will look/feel great. the scale is not the only way to tell if you're "thin enough". I've been pissed because I've had half pound gains some weeks. But then I measure myself & realize I'm smaller, so it's muscle or water. Gotta at least get 1200 cals a day though. BTW- don't fall for the miracle pill, food, or diets traps. it's all BS:icon_bs:.
Just use common sense & eat healthy food in as natural a state as possible (limiting red meat intake)...I bet you'll come back & post HAPPY EVER AFTER pics real soon. Good luck! :)

Hello friend,

I suggest you just focus on working out and "toning" your body instead of losing weight, there are TONS of good programs and videos out there, most of them free, you can follow. Eating 1000 calories at your age and height is not healthy at all, perhaps your metabolism is very low because of that which could make you feel miserable and you do not want that!

You're not overweight so losing fat will be difficult. If you want to lose, you're going to have to work at it with exercise. Start going for runs, they'll help a lot.

I hate to refer out to Cosmopolitan Magazine, but they have a 1-page exercise list in each issue. When I was in middle and high school, my friends and I would do those exercises. A couple of us gained a few pounds, but we actually looked like we lost weight. It might feel like you're overweight, but all you've got to do if you're really worried is tighten it up a little bit :) You'll also *feel* super healthy!
