Which way of running will be more effiecent for the out-of-shape person?

I have been smoking hard for nearly 6 years (smoking dope, cigarettes, and multiple hard drugs), and have gotten extremely out of shape since then, due to lack of exercise and smoking. My body is still decently strong and whatnot, its just my cardio that is lacking big-time compared to what I use to be as a kid. I am currently 19, 5"11 and weigh 160, and I recently tried to jog 0.5 miles and could not finish it, and once I stopped I was very lightheaded, dizzy, and exhausted for the rest of the day. So here is my question

To get back in cardio shape (yes I've quit smoking for a month now), should I try running at a fast pace for a short ammount of time, or go for a slow run (jog) for a longer period of time?

HIIT training will boost your V02 max more effectively than any other form of cardio training.

There's a seperate sub-forum towards the bottom of the forum front page specifically for HIIT.

I think the best answer is both. Most of your runs should be either longer jogs (long is relative, nothing wrong with .5 miles) and paced medium distances. However, at least once a week, and not more than twice a week, you should do max-speed intervals (HIIT).

dont do interval training if you are badly out of shape, no need to risk injury i would recomend very low intensity running for about 5 km, gradually increase the intensity and then increase distance by 10-15% per week no more, then you can do hiit. remeber that interval training is very stressful on the body and can be harmful to a person who is out of shape so better build up before that.. i however dont like interval training, i like more the prolonged high intensity runs very close to max hr. i was a cigarette smoker for 7 years and did weed for 1 year and this is what made me get into shape all the best MB

I would say longer runs slower pace, first you will usaully burn more calories, being that you are running longer keeping you hart rate higher for a longer amount of time, and no need to push too hard, the harder you push the more likley you are to get burned out, make it fun I mean push youre self some but come back slowly and make it fell good!!!!
