which supplements would suit me best?

hi, im a new member and know very little about supplements. ill tell you the whole story and see if you can help me.

i used to be very active before i went to university, i played rugby, canoed and ran alot but i never seemed to be able to get good muscle tone. when i went to uni my training suffered and i lost and muscle tone i had. ive now finished uni and want to try get a 6 pack, pecs, biceps etc.

now what im wondering is are supplements the right way to go? can i get the results i want without them considering i dont really want to have huge muscles, just toned ones. im a kickboxer now and everyone i fight against is in much better shape than me. can anyone help me out?

of course you can get results without using supplements. they're not necessary. training and nutrition and active recovery are the keys. supplements play a very small part if they are used.

for instance, protein powders should only be used if one cannot get enough protein in their diet. one does not get results from protein powders, that comes from you. :)

ok i guess ill just see how it goes. ive just joined a new gym so ill try a heavy schedule and see the effects. another thing why do proffesional athletes use protein powders? im sure they all have very well managed diets.

truthfully, i'd imagine that most use protein powders because they're getting paid to be a sponser. :D

some of these guys eat 300-400 grams of protein a day so they get it from anywhere and everywhere. many ppl use them before and after a workout for a quick shot of protein. or use them in addition to a meal to boost the protein content.

abear, quick question. What are 'active recovery days'? Is that like doing light cardio on a non-weight lifting day?

ha, i think thats a term i pulled out my rear. :D

but yea thats what i mean, cardio on "off" days. i use to believe that when trying to gain you shouldnt do cardio at all. but when i did start doing it on off days, i just generally felt better, i seemed to recover better. i wasnt as stiff for my workouts and wasnt as sore as i used to be.

hope that kinda sorta makes sense :)
