Which diet is the best one?

There are so many different kind of diets and I get a little confused which diet is actually the best one? And of course which is the fastest way to lose weight? During the past weeks I have been doing something like a low-calorie diet but it seems like it doesn't really work for me. Do you know any good diets which I could try?

No such thing as one best diet.

The best one is going to be the one that you are able to adhere to consistently over a long enough period of time to make an appreciable difference in your appearance.

And what do you mean a low calorie approach didn't work?

If your calories are below what you expend in a given period of time, you have to lose weight.

Ugh dang blasted machine locked up on me..

The best "diet" is not a diet but an eating plan you can stick with for the rest of your life... one that doesn't cut out major food groups or leaving you feeling deprived.

The trick to weight loss, is using more calories than you take in... going to low on your calories can be detrimental long term... you want a moderate amount of calories..

I'm going to sound like a lemming here:

The best diet is one that you can follow that brings about reasonable results.

For example, if you have the type of personality that you need great gains at the start to keep motivated, then you need to pick a more drastic energy reduction and/or energy burning type plan. (The question is though, what do you do at the end?)

Other people want to live comfortably while on the eating plan. For them, something that doesn't make them feel deprived is key to them.

Other people want a plan where they dont have to think, where their foods are pre-selected and they dont have to balance much.

Figure out what you are and then search out a plan that fits your personality. And if you have questions, the people here are here to help.

some questions about diet

Hi friends, I have some questions about diet. If you answer my questions it will be great appreciated because I am looking for the answers for long time. Who created or promotes the diet? How does the diet work? How long should you stay on the diet? Are there any special foods, pills, or equipment needed for the diet? Is exercise required or recommended while on the diet? Do you feel it is safe?

Any diet/eating plan that you stay on for a limited amount of time and then stop afterwards is ridiculous. The only thing that should change at the end is that you add however calories more to your daily intake to reach equilibrium.

If you're changing foods or anything like that you really are setting yourself up for yo-yo patterns.

Who created or promotes the diet?
You do - based on your user name, i'd check with your doctor to make sure there are no specific requirements you have - if you're doing chemo treatments, or certain medications, etc.
How does the diet work?
YOu eat reasonable quanties of all the food groups, within a given calorie range that works for your current weight and activity level
How long should you stay on the diet?
It's a lifestyle change, not a diet so the rest of your life...
Are there any special foods, pills, or equipment needed for the diet?
Just a way to track calories and common sense... common sense is often hard to come by though
Is exercise required or recommended while on the diet? Do you feel it is safe?
As long as your doctor says exercise is ok (since cancer survivor means you are in contact with doctors), everyone should exercise regularly = walking is exercise
Do you feel it is safe?
Why would anyone do anything they didn't think was safe?

Jane: Avoid sugar, starches and walk 30 minutes per day. This will create lifelong simple routines which create preventive maintenance. If you want a 22 yr old bikini / model body, do the above and add....2 days of lightweight high rep training for about 20 minutes each day AND do not eat past 8pm. I've been doing this for 9 years now. After trying ALL...yes all...cardio, aerobics, low fat/calorie, weight training, pills, etc, this one works. Simply eat meats, veggies (non starchy), nuts, dairy (no yogurt or milk). Sugars and starches are the killers which turn your internal switch on to fat making. When you avoid them the switch is flipped to fat burning. Hard exercise will burn you out. Simple walking every day is all you need. 90% eating properly/10% exercise. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Fat and calories are okay!!! i eat up to 4000 calories and 600g of fat per day. I am 44 yrs old with body fat less than 10%. I only walk 30 minutes each day. Only weigh yourself every 90 days. Your clothes will tell you how you are progressing. Good Luck. You can do it. Surffman

Surffman, where are you getting your information from? Sounds like you're a disciple of Atkins...

I don't argue that walking is a great form of exercise... but weight training in combination with walking is important...

Not eating after 8 is really a myth - I have a bedtime snack every single night, and it's not prevented me from losing weight...

600 grams of fat, based on a 4000 calorie a day diet is about 15 percent of your intake, that's not a bad number, but 4000 calories a day for the person who's not bulking is quite a bit...

You should not be giving advice.

Period.

And to speak specifically....

Jane: Avoid sugar, starches and walk 30 minutes per day.

I just LOVE the absolutes you provide. LOL.

Why no sugar or starches?

What's magical about walking and 30 minutes of duration?

This will create lifelong simple routines which create preventive maintenance.

Ohhh, how fancy.

If you want a 22 yr old bikini / model body, do the above and add....2 days of lightweight high rep training for about 20 minutes each day AND do not eat past 8pm.

Holy mother of God, you've managed to fit the two of the largest fitness/nutrition myths into one sentence.

Why high rep weight training?

Why can't you eat after 8pm assuming calories are in check?

After trying ALL...yes all...cardio, aerobics, low fat/calorie, weight training, pills, etc, this one works.

Did you try ALL of them?

(no yogurt or milk).

Why?

Sugars and starches are the killers which turn your internal switch on to fat making.

Please explain this?

And keep the explanation in this context: You are in a caloric deficit yet eating sugars and starches... how do said foods switch on "fat making?"

Hard exercise will burn you out.

Define hard please.

Fat and calories are okay!!! i eat up to 4000 calories and 600g of fat per day. I am 44 yrs old with body fat less than 10%.

By ok, are you suggesting we don't need to worry about how many calories we consume. I mean, it's tough to see the moral to your nice little story you've got going on here.... but if I didn't know any better, it seems as if you're simply saying, sugar makes you fat, calories do not.

And is your n=1 sample population of yourself supposed to serve as a valid reason to listen to you?

I'm less than 10% body fat as well and I eat starchy stuff by the truckload.

best diet

First of all do not ever get discouraged.there are lot of diet plans. What ever diet plan you will chose make it part of your lifestyle.try to find lot of benefits of healthy diet and exercise it will always keep you motivated.Stick to a regular exercise program and try to enjoy your exercise program exercise done with a joyful heart is always effective.

For me, the best diet is one where I can eat delicious meals and enjoy a beer/wine in the evening. This usually involves having a small breakfast, the largest meal for lunch and salad with the booze in the evening.

I also do exercise in the form of jogging and some home workout routine to maintain muscle mass and burn a few extra calories.
