Whey Sucks

I saw this on another forum

You want a STEADY influx of amino acids, not a big dump of them and nothing. A piece of steak or chicken is leaching out amino's into your blood for 8-14+ hours. Casein 6-7, whey, 1-2. Do you REALLY think you are synthesizing that much muscle tissue in 1-2 hours. Because that is what you are trying to do with whey. It is very insulingenic also.

THAT is the short answer--believe what you will, but whey is a CRAP protein for anything except PWO, OR, to add to a WHOLE FOOD MEAL. As a meal replacement the way most people use them, it just leads to an epic failure for most lifters.

I wouldn't use whey as a meal replacement, no. Doesn't mean it sucks, though. It's good for it's purpose, which is a large spike in blood amino acid levels that subsides relatively quick.

I guess whey is good for post-workout but other times one should take a whey/casein blend or whole-food protein sources.

ditto. there are a few studies out there that showed slightly increased muscle growth with trainees on whey+casein blends vs. straight whey.

as for using a shake as a meal replacement, I recommend including either carbs or a fat to make it a 'real meal'. a shake and some fruit, or nuts, is usually how i roll.

Meal replacement? What are you getting from two scoops of whey- 220 calories? Even with milk, under 400? How much (or little) are you eating if one of your "meals" is this low in calories? Agree with the board- PWO and first thing in the AM, and have read a few studies agreeing with the above post that whey and casein PWO is optimal.

i put 3/4 scoop casein/whey blend in my morning oatmeal, and 1 scoop for my pwo shake at night, but I also take it at night even if I didnt workout... is that a bad thing to do?

I think it's great for a post-workout shake. I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but working out makes me intensely hungry and this helps a lot. I still eat meat with a bunch of me meals, so it definitely isn't a replacement.

Correct way to eat/drink whey- refreshing to read!!

Whey can be a great way to get sufficient protein in when you are away or have limited time.

If you find a nice one, it can be a bit addictive too :p
