whey protein.

Alright correct me if Im wrong but to me whey protein seems like a waste of money to me. I get plenty of protein out of my meals and post work out I make a smoothie with 4 raw eggs, oj, yogurt, and berries. Is there something Im missing about whey protein that makes it seem like a waste of money to me?

If your diet is spot on, I see no reason to add whey.

I use it for immediate protein synthesis PWO and to make up for all the protein I can't eat because of expense or not having a big enough stomach.

If you can get 1g of protein per pound of lean body mass, as a minimum, every day, through whole foods....great!

most of us lack the time or budget for that. a good whey or whey+casien blend will set you back about 50 cents per 20-25g serving. that much chicken breast is about $1.50 in my area, and requires cooking, refridgeration for leftovers, etc..

also, raw egg whites can give you salmonella food poisoning, and cooked egg whites are more bio-available to the body. in other words, cook your eggs to get the most out of them with the lowest risk of a food borne pathogen.

Also, like Cynic mentioned, whey for PWO is absorbed a lot quicker than egg protein. Egg protein is slower digesting. If you want the most from your workout, 100% whey or a whey blend of some sort is recommended.

If you buy Met-rex or LA muscle stuff then yeah its a waste.

I can get 100g of protien from whey for the price of 30g protien from turkey.

But if you have the time and money stick to real food. Whey is a last resort

Remember all whey isn't created equal. There is better and cheaper forms. Isolate should be the first thing listed.

i realize this thread is over a month old, but when you're on a calorie deficit (and still lifting) can you use the whey protein mix to prevent muscle loss?

You utilize protein timing to help minimize catabolism. Whey protein has little to no advantage over regular protein, it's just more convenient. If you get adequate protein, and don't go into to big of a caloric deficit you shouldn't lose much/any muscle.

is it possible to intake to much protein ?? i take 2 scoops in the morning with milk and 5 whites and 1 yolk on wheat plus 2 more pwo w/ water and dextrose and 1 scoope before bed with cottage ... wasting my money eating that much ??

also if the body doesn't absorb all the protein it just go to waste right ?? wont be store into fat like sugar and carbs???

thanks !

Only a fraction of the protein you eat is built in as muscle mass, almost all of it is oxidised to energy and if that energy isnt used it get stored as fat.
You can stress the kindneys if you have a very high intake but for a healthy individual its nothing to worry about.

You should focus on getting the majority of your protein from real foods. If you are eating healthy, you should be able to handle a lot more protein than you have in mind.

I was not going to take but someone that i know who is my age takes it and i thought that you had to be a certain age to take stuff like that.

Having said that i would like to get bigger as i am joining a American Football team and don't want to be getting injured every game.

All whey protein is is just a simple way to get your protein in, it would be totally fine at your age, but like I said, don't focus on it to get all of your protein in.
