Whey Protein Substitute?

Hey,

I am relatively new to doing workouts and such and was hoping that someone could help me out. I know that whey protein is a popular choice for pre/post workouts, but I have a milk allergy which prevents me from using it. Is there any viable substitutes for whey protein? Like maybe soy protein?

Hi,

You can try egg protein (from ON e.g.) if You dont have allergy to its components. Or soy protein also from ON. They dont use GMOs. They say. But soy products may contain fitooestrogens (isoflavones). They say that these soy-protein products for bodybuilders dont have this. My pt offers egg protein for his clients.

You can find lots of articles about these proteins on the internet.

My first choice would definitely be egg if you can't handle ANY lactose.

Is it lactose intolerance? If so, how bad? I only ask because some people can tolerate more than others, and if it's minor, your first shot could be to try whey protein isolate. A lot of people are okay with that in your situation.

As for soy, I've done some reading recently, but I haven't come to a large enough conclusion as to whether or not soy is "bad" for men. There are great things about soy - anti-catabolic, helps lower cholesterol, etc. However, the estrogen thing is still up in the air as far as I know. I've heard mixed things, even from big name fitness people. The only extreme case I have seen is the one in a Men's Health article a while back. HOWEVER (big BUT here), he was drinking 12 cups of soy milk a day. Obviously, you're nowhere near that.

Summary:
1) Try whey isolate or even milk protein isolate (which I think is better)
2) If that's a no go, use egg
3) I wouldn't worry too much about using soy as long as it's not excessive (as far as I currently know, anyway)

Perhaps someone can back me up, or tell me I'm wrong, with some soy studies.

In the meantime, you can read this article by Will Brink if you like:

There are some whey protein shakes out there which are 100% lactose free. They do cost more. Isopure has one that I know of.

remember, shakes aren't mandatory. You could always just eat more steak, chicken/turkey, lean pork, fish, and go to town on eggs.

Consider trying vegetable protein. I buy my whey protein from BulkFoodsDirect.com and they are going to be coming out with a vegetable protein powder sometime next month. Could be something worth checking into.

problem with vegetable protein, in general, is that its not complete.
hopefully this veg. protein powder company did its homework and got various vegetarian sources to provide a complete amino profile.

True. Not that big a deal over the course of the day though.

I still say try isolate, then go egg, then soy as a last resort.

Thanks guys for the help. But before I tryout the isolate, I should let you know that I'm not lactose intolerant. I'm actually allergic to milk protein. Does that have any barring on using the whey isolate? If so, I'll def try out the egg and see how that works

Yes! whey is milk protein. You definitely can't take that then. Good thing you mentioned. Do you know if it's casein or whey that you're allergic too, or both?
