okay i've been eating healthy for a couple of months and prepare all my meals and eat every 3 hours or so. however my schedule is about to change and will need one portable meal per day and so am seriously considering purchasing some whey protein powder (to have with fruit) in order to replace one of my daily meals for ease of portability.

my question is this, should i just buy any whey powder i see in the grocery store? (which by the way are more affordable in these harsh financial times)....or do i have to purchase the expensive brands from the health food stores? any brand suggestions? and anything in the ingredients etc that i need to look out for to know the good from the bad?...any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hey,

I personally buy my protein from 'myprotein'

Ive been using it for the last few months and am really happy with it. Mixes well, has little to no taste, is cheap, and the service I've had has been great.

I personally go for the unflavoured Impact Whey protein, 2.5kg bag, which is around £20, you can buy them in 1kg bags for £10, and even try some samples for 49p (they recently brought out new flavours, the choc nut ones quite nice, but I prefer to mix my own flavour in)

P&P is £3.45, and its sent by recorded delivery.

Hopefully Im not gonna get blasted for supplying a link, but I have absolutely no connection to them other than being a very satisfied customer.

I have a referer code which gives you 5% discount on your first order, so if you do go for it, feel free to use it 'MP104072'

If not, I would personaly go to somewhere like Holland and Barratt, or CNG instead of the supermarkets, but thats just my preference :D

Hope this helps.

The problem with the stuff you find in stores, IMO, is it generally tastes like butt, lol.

I'm a fan of Optimum Nutrition and Syntrax at the moment.

thanks synyster! i was actually just looking at the brands from like tesco or holland and barrett. so i'm so glad i read your post first before i placed an order because the 'myprotein' brand is working out to be more affordable inclusive of P&P, and i'll totally use the 5% discount code...yay me!

i've seen you loads of times giving encouragement/advice on the forum so i'm sure everyone who's seen your posts knows your not on here for commercial purposes :)

hey steve, thanks for the advice....i've just looked up optimum nutrition and syntrax and they are both working out to be a little more than i can afford for right now, i'll definitely keep the two brands in mind though for future purposes.

i think for starters i'll try out the above suggested 'myprotein' brand....and i'm glad at least one person's tried it so here's hoping it won't taste like butt...lol!

Your welcome!

Its cheaper because they dont use fancy packaging, and they send it out in a refill bag (although the refill bag has a resealable top so you can keep the powder in there no problem)

(Nesquick milkshake powder is the secret ingredient if you dont like the taste!! ;) )

Right now I"m using the Body Fortress stuff I can get at Costco - I think I have the vanilla flavor. It's .. ok. :) Mostly I just mix it with some water and chug it, so I kind of avoid the taste as much as possible.

If it fits in with your calories, you can mix it with some orange juice, and it kinda tastes like an Orange Julius (or a Frozen Orange, if you're from Atlanta and know the Varsity). :)

It's not bad. It's not great, mind you, but not bad.

The powders are realtively the same for the most part. The only real difference you'll see in terms of protein quality will be the amount of whey isolate and whey concentrate in a product. The difference between them is the amount of filtration thats done. isolate is a more complicated process that results basically is 100% pure protein. whereas concentrate is cheaper, and contains trace carbs and fats.

The important thing to take from this however is that your body responds to the protein in any product in much the same way, so the only consideration you should have are things like do i care if there is artificial sweetners in this product or not, and/or how does this product taste to me. Most suppliment stores should have the ability to taste a brand with a half scoop if you're really concerned about taste. As a general rule, the fruit flavored whey is normally bad (an aquired taste), and the milk type ones like chocolate and vanilla are generally good.

I haven't found a fruit flavor I've liked until Syntrax. They're lemonade flavor is killer.

ON's chocolate and vanilla ice cream kick ass too.

Thanks, my order arrives hopefully on friday, so will definitely keep that in mind.

Thanks a bunch kara!...hmmm an orange julius? i've definitely learned something new today...lol! actually the body fortress stuff is also available here in the uk (i saw it in one of the sites i checked) so will remember the vanilla's a safe choice.

Thanks jynus for the info, and for clearing up the difference between the whey isolate and concentrate, funny enough i was just reading up on that before i saw your post. and thanks a bunch for letting me know that the fruit flavours are usually not the best....it makes alot of sense now why most reviews i've read are all in support of chocolate or vanilla.

Thanks steve...i'll definitely want to try one of these two brands at some point in the future so will keep those flavours in mind.

Protein is food.

That's like asking, "Do I need to exercise if I'm going to eat chicken?"

So I guess there is such a thing as Karma..

It appears I won the myprotein 2009 survey competition..£250 of MP vouchers to spend!!

I feel like a kid in a sweet shop!!! Gonna try a few new (to me) products, as I only really incorporate Whey Protein (plus vit's and EFA's) at the moment.

There gonna announce me on the website today as the winner, along with a VERY cheesey statement (I told them to write what they wanted but to send it me first..its lame, but truthfull so its all good!!)

On the negative my car failed its MOT so not sure what Karmas doing with that!!!

wow....that's some serious good luck woohoo for you!:) funny thing is i just got an email from them yesterday letting me know they'd dispatched my order and a second saying that there was a survey competition of which the £250 winner would be announced today....i remember thinking it totally sucks coz i wish i'd have been able to take the survey (i never win anything but it doesn't hurt to try right lol!).

oh well, from your ticker i see you've worked damn hard to get where you are with your weight loss....so you totally deserve that voucher and are completely allowed to feel like a kid in a sweetshop...lol!

i keep saying i need to pop into your diary to ask how you went from 349 to 195....how long did it take? how many workouts a week? etc i really need to take a look at your diary coz thats a job well done and congratulations are in order! i started out around 350+ and now at 313 so i find it really inspiring for people who started at 300+ to managae to loose so much! it's people like you who inspire me to keep going and to KNOW that its possible that it can be done.

k, all the best xoxo

PS: my whey protein just arrived (i chose the choc nut flavour as you'd recommended), i've just done a quick taster session mixing it with some skim milk and it's great! just what i needed! at least i'll be able to do my one daily portable 'meal' for the day...carbs never seem to be a problem to load up on but protein is always such a task so that helps take a load off my mind. it's one less meal i have to worry about preparing for the day, the rest of the meals i'll continue to prepare as i was before. :seeya:

For sure. I use the No sugar added stuff. It only adds 35 calories to your drink and makes it 100x better tasting.
