Sport Whey protein... I'm cutting.

Sport Fitness
I'm jumping off a 6+ month bulking cycle and going lean again. I need to know a good whey protein supplement that is pretty tasty without breaking the bank. I'd like low sugar (or none), and low carbs (if possible). I already looked at Jay Robb's protein... and that's way to expensive for me. I'd like to hear some input on tasty mixes with good value.

Thanks.

a blend is always good vs. pure whey.

check nitrean's price at - its very tastey stuff, and sometimes there's sales if you buy two tubs.

All 3 flavors are pretty damn good.
The vanilla is my favorite, and seems to have a caramel / butterscotch kind of hint of flavor to it too.

chocolate is very mild, but good.

the strawberry is my favorite if i am adding dextrose, post workout. tastes like strawberry quik

Pardon my intrusion here, but could you please explain why? I don't know much, and from my limited view it seems like a blend would be better for PWR but if you were just supplementing a snack or meal that casein alone would be better for hunger control. What am I missing?

Casein is good, but takes a while for your body to digest it. Whey is easily and quickly used by your body. Mixing both is good as you get quick and lasting protein.

During the day I supplement with just whey and at night I use a mix of the two.

this is a good way to summarize why a blend always beats pure whey. if there's any whey, it digests quickly. it doesn't get balled up with the casein in your gut, so you get a quick protein boost, as well as protein that'll stay with you a couple hours.

I used to have the link to the research article where they compared whey isolate with a whey isolate plus casein blend (using a ratio comparable to what's out on the market), and the group on the blend put on a little more lean mass, and slightly less body fat than the whey group.

it was not an earth shattering amount, but it was proof positive.

whey also tends to mix easily, while casein and egg protein likes to clump up unless the manufacturer does their job and processes it in a way that makes its more mixable.

Nitrean is really fluffy, and almost never clumps up on me. ON's 'pro complex' is also a blend, and it wasn't bad tasting and didn't clump much either.

BTW, I dislike Stevia as a sweetner. I'll take sucralose anyday.

Malkore,

Curious. Is that just a personal taste preference or is there another reason?

I find most artificial sweeteners too sweet.

Saccharin and Aspartame both have a chemical taste to me (haven't touched the latter in about 5 years). I used Sucralose when it first came out but it really caused some gastric upset issues for me. Still, too sweet though. I only use about 1/2 a packet.

I've been using Stevia packets for a while. Same thing, too sweet and end up using 1/2 of it. It's OK in tea and sprinkled on some oatmeal but makes coffee taste terrible. Not a huge coffee drinker but when I do I just eat the 15 calories in a pack of sugar and then make sure I burn it off.
