whey protein after cardio?

I like to run and swim. Most of the time, when I run, I go in the 6-8 mile range, and when I swim, I like to do at least 2 miles. Does anyone know if taking whey protein is needed after these kinds of activities or are carbs all you really need to be eating afterwards?
 
If you are active, it is advisable to eat 1g of protein for 1 lb of bodymass; so why not just take the protein shake after workout. It won't hurt and help toward the total protein that you will need to consume.
