Sport where to start with diet?

hey guys i recently posted in the weight training forum to see how i get started with that and i was reminded about my diet. i'm 19 years old, about 5'11'' and a mere 125lbs which i guess would lead one to conclude that i also have a slender frame and i do. but i was looking to gain about twenty pounds for starters and i know that i need a high calorie diet to help. a friend of mine told me there are good calories and bad calories and i assume fast food calories aren't what i'm looking for. so what should my diet consist of specifically if i want to make a true commitment to all of this? thanks.
 
complex carbs such as whole grain, fibrous carbs (vegetables), some simple carbs such as fruits and lowfat dairy, lean protein such as chicken, tuna very lean beef; and then good fats such as natural peanut butter.
