where do i start???

I really want to start running. There's a race in July where I live, but where do I start. I have no idea how to start training for it. I've never really been a runner, but I'd love to start.

Miles of almost daily running, with a good diet, time yourself, set targets.

It sort of depends on things like:

how far can you normally run?
are you more of a sprinter or a distance runner?
how far is this race?
are you trying to finish in under a certain time, or do you just want to finish?
what shape is your body currently in?
what's your diet like? are you willing to change it?
are you in the habit of working out?

If you don't care how you do, just sign up and give it your best shot. But to do as well as you can, I recommend eating well and routinely running distances that are similar to the length of the race.
