Sport when to avoid carbs?

when is is best to avoid carbs like pasta? i know you need it after workouts.... but is it good to have it at night if your not gonna burn it?

Well, what are your goals? If you're going for fat loss, I recommend that your last meal of the day contain only fiberous carbs, such as dark green veggies. But if you're going for muscle mass building, a complex carb, such as brown rice, at night is ok so your muscles will keep growing growing growing!

Like said above, it all depends on your goals. Some are to think that if your goal is to lose fat, then it is best to consume carbs before 4pm however I do not use this method.

If your goal is fat loss then you should plan your carb intake during your pre-workout, post workout and post post workout meals.

when is it best to avoid carbs? really and truely, there is no time to avoid carbs

some have latched on to protein/fats and protein/carb meals but that theory has been exposed. some have also said to avoid carbs after a certain time as mentioned, but even that doesnt hold water too well. some even say to avoid carbs before cardio, but that too is flawed

so again, when is the best time to avoid carbs? really and truely, there is no best time to avoid carbs

haha, i did a complete circle :p

I agree to some extent but I think what it really boils down to in this fitness world, is what works for YOUR body type.

I myself utilize the separation method e.g. pro/carb - pro/fat with great success everytime. Others may not respond well to this method and may respond better combining all 3 macros in a single meal.

Basically, there are general guidelines for people to follow based on their goals etc.....however it really comes down to how your body responds to the diet you are utilizing.

i eat a bowl of pasta with a simple homemade lean beef and tomato sauce around 300 days a year pre workout. last 2 yrs has seen a significant reduction in bodyfat and has helped alot with my muscle gain, combined with everything else of course, so i'd say pre workout but thats just what i'm used to, you have to develop ur own diet thats best for you. also understanding complex carbs and protiens etc and there uses helped me to piece my current eating plan together only you can create your own proper diet imo

When I was losing weight, I had carbs only with dinner. Now I'm maintaining and allow myself a whole wheat pita bread occasionally with lunch. Do what works for you.

good deal :)

personally, i dont give it much thought as its just a theory with no substance behind it. i know a few others who do it as well.

suzanne sommers recommends the same thing ;)

Agree, if your body needs it, it needs it.

>some even say to avoid carbs before cardio, but that too is flawed

I agree, that's seems ridiculous in my opinion also

This brings me on to a similar subject. Some people say don't eat late at night. I say if your hungry and your body needs it provided your not having a big meal directly before you goto bed then you should eat.
Could be anything so long as like any other meal it's not saturated with fat.
Something as usually recommended 50 grammes of carbs and 15-25 g of protein.
This subject was brought up by my boxing coach saying it lies on your stomach, and it's still there in the morning because your body shuts down and metabolism slows etc etc.
In my opinion and from what i've learnt eating after intense workout such as a boxing session is good for your body BECAUSE it's just going to send nutrients to the muscles and convert carbs into the liver to replen glycogen stores even after your 20 minute window closes.
Also High intensity training raises your metabolism for several hours so i see no problem with eating late at night, even more so in these circumstances.
I would however increase the protein intake aswell after bouts of intense exercise as your muscles are more receptive to protein intake.

What does everyone else think?

im looking to build muscle and lose fat, im sure ill be ok at eating pasta at night, its not like im having a big fat cake like i used to, its an improvment, which in its self will lose me weight

If you looking to get lean don't eat carbs at night. Eat carbs at breakfest and around weight training sessions only. However, green veggies can be eaten most anytime of the day.

its ok to eat around cardio sessions also right?

as a said mate, its ok to eat carbs any time, just don't have big meals directly before bed, if you feel hungry ....eat.
if you feel hungry then more than likely glycogen stores are low and you will start to get muscle deterioration, not good
