when shopping for a weight bench or weight system

I am looking for a gift for my husband for his birthday which is coming up. I am probably going to buy used from craigslist, but am just not sure what to look for and what would be a good price. If we buy something, I would also want it to be something I can use as well.

I have found one which they are calling an "olympic style weight set" for $250. It included the following:

olympic style bar (45pounds) bench, 2 hand curl bar and single arm curl bar as well. Also comes with push up stands 8 clamps and 315pounds worth of weight. Bench will do normal, incline and decline.. Great shape never left or put outside.
2x 45pounds
2x 35 pounds
2x 10 pounds
4x 5pounds
2x 2.5pounds

any thoughts? Is that a good price? Is that a pretty good option for a well-rounded work-out? If I should be looking for something different what would that be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have also found a Weider Pro 4250 Home Gym for $100. It looks like it was originally purchased from Wal-Mart for $397. Any thoughts? Looks like it's more of a cable system of sorts.

if that first olympic set is in good shape, yeah that's a reasonable price. weight plates and bars don't usually wear much when kept indoors, so if the padded cushions of the bench aren't destroyed, i'd go for that set. I paid just under $200 new for my adjustable flat to incline bench. it doesn't decline, and it doesn't have rests for a barbell... dumbbell use only (find for me).

the Weider gym is going to be pretty weak all around, and probably a cable system with hollow rolled-bars rather than standard olympic bars.

you'd be able to easily buy more plates brand new or used, since olympic gear is a standard size. the weider will only take weider weights.

Ditto. Go with the olympic weights. You can find a better price if you're patient, but probably not much better.

thanks for the input. That was my initial thought...to go with the olympic set. Is it hard to find a new set that isn't too expensive? I know they sell this stuff at Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, ****'s, etc. etc. and if I bought new, do I need to get EVERYTHING? or would there be a good set to start with?

Thanks!!

Alright, well by the time I responded to that first ad the weights were sold. I have found another though...

4-45lb
4-25lb
6-10lb
6-5lb

and a 45lb olympic bar and 25lb curling bar with a weight tree

There is no bench or anything with this set and the guy will take $180. Thoughts?

Are weight benches easy to come by? Inexepensive? Does quality/cost matter?

Benches are easy to come by if you watch the classifieds. You can find simple but reasonably priced new benches, too, if necessary.
