What's your ' Vanity / Health ' ratio ?

A friend of mine who is a personal trainer sent me an e-mail that was talking about the various motivations most average people have for starting to eat well, begin exercising etc. etc. ( apart from those people who have specific ' performance related ' reasons such as sports, certain jobs etc. ).

In it, he sent along a tongue in cheek ' Vanity Calculator ' taken from another fitness forum years ago. The ' Vanity Calculator ' is ....

100 - ( your age X 1.3 )

.....so if you're 20, in theory, your reason for maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle is motivated by 75 % Vanity and 25 % Health. And, if you're 50, it's 35 % Vanity and 65 % Health.

Not sure if age is the dominant determining factor, but in my case at least, as a father of 4 teens etc. etc. I'd have to say my ' Vanity / Health Ratio ' is probably about 20% Vanity / 80% Health ( I'd include mental health as part of this btw ). Although, when I told my kids I thought I was a 20 / 80 ratio, they just laughed and told me I was ' full of it ' and said I would always score a 100 on anything having to do with vanity ( must say, I can't wait for the kids to leave home ! )

What would you say your ' Vanity / Health ' Ratio ' is ?

I'd say that my ratios is the polar opposite of yours: 90% vanity / 10% health (w/o mental health). I'm 29 and I don't have any kids. And...let's just say that I'm having a good time.

At this point in my life, my health doesn't motivate me to workout. It does, however, motivate me to face my demons, try to be responsible and to be a mature adult. But, as for working out, health isn't much of a factor (although, maybe it should be???)

Also, I can't really figure out the ratios if I include mental health. Vanity and mental health seem to be inherently related. I obviously have a skewed view of things (as my vanity percentage is so high) but at the same time, I actively work toward achieving a stable and secure mental state.

Hmmm...maybe this is a sign that I have a long way to go!

I think mine might be 50/50. Both how I look and feel are very important to me. I'm not trying to be perfect in either one but both seem to be an equal contributor for motivation.

99.99% Vanity: 0.01% Health.

Am I the only one? XD I want the ladies to do a double or even a triple take, shirt on or off. Other than that my life is pretty excellent. And so is my health as far as I can tell.

And some of the guys, too. Hahahaha. You know that thing guys do where they notice another guy (out of the corners of their eyes of course) and they get this kind of shocked look on their face that they then immediately hide? Well I want to be the one getting the looks rather than giving them.

aeonteal, if you ask me (and I'm aware that you didn't :p), you are seriously overthinking it. :)

Mostly health for me...

I like feeling strong and able bodied. But I'd be lying if I said the great body wasn't a big plus.

For me, it's a healthy balance.

It's probably just an an age thing, cause back in my late teens and into my 20's, I was probably much closer to 90% vanity / 10% health as well. :)

I'm in my mid thirties and I'm struggling to answer this. Obviously my health is important to me and I'm alot more aware of my mortality than I was 10 years ago but, even so, probably 80% vanity if I'm being brutally honest!

hahaha

me on the other hand-

I am just being a good steward fo the temple my Creator has intrusted me with

i dont know what you just said ...but i agree:)

hows your ab wheel experiment going ff???....have you ate tarmac yet??

im still chomping plenty of fat:drooling1:

hmmm, what I said was-

Marko is an evil man stuck on appearances

and I

Flyinfree am a godly, angelic, just to the right hand of god, saint of a man.

:11doh:

I finally had to seperate the wheels. I have one at work and one at home. I have eatin it a few times. Each time I feel strong I try it, and I look like a horse on roller skates for a minute, and then ooooof - I eat it BIG! :yelrotflmao:

50 - 50 for me. I started working out before I had my first cardiac issue, but now work out to maintain and improve my health but also so I fantasize about the twenty-something honeys in my training classes.

This is a tough one for me. As between vanity & health, I'd say it's about 50-50.

That said, I don't think vanity OR health is my primary motivator! My mindset is that of a competitive athlete, even if I'm not really "competing" at this point. I still view my lifting as training, though, and the key for me is to be faster, stronger, and better when I play. I'd take a hit on my looks or my health if it turned me into a much more agile skater or a pure scorer. Heh. To what degree? Dunno...

I'm somewhat the same as you actually.

While my motivation for committing to a lifetime exercise and a proper diet is primary related to health, my workouts allow me to ' kill two birds with one stone ' as it were - i.e affording me the cardio fitness and speed, strength etc. etc. to still play hockey at a pretty competitive level.
