This may sound dumb, but does anyone know if there is an actual difference between sweet potatoes and yams?

I've always called them sweet potatoes (the word "yam" just bugs me). Is it regional (seems like southerners tend to say S.P. a little more than yam)? Or is it personal preference?

Not that it really matters, just wondering.

The nutritional facts are pretty much the same. I think the yams are actually orange, but the grocery stores says their sweet potatoes.

So they are actually two different things? If the yams are the orange ones, then what the heck are sweet potatoes, b/c I've always called the orange potatoes, sweet potatoes.
