Whats a good brand for road bikes that go 25mph+ that aren't uber expensive.

In the past I've stuck with "Next" branded mountain bikes. And currently am enjoying the "Road Master" with 18mph limit, which sets me back a little. I've trained on the moutain bike for a while, using it for long distances biking too. Anyway, I want to start doing 26 mile trips and such without wasting time because the bike is limited speed, heavy, and not setting me back, just need one for the proper terran..

Is the speed limited by the gearing or how hard you are pedalling. I dont know about you but I dont think I have ever got a bike to its "max speed"

Yeah, its limited by gearing, 6 gears, but the resistance is way to easy.

For the most part I get the max speed all the time, I want to have something faster to add challenge, more resistance, and more speed.

Right well im not really up with the play with road bikes but I would say you would need an out and out road bike to reach that sort of speed. A hyrbrid would be too heavy and not aerodynamic enough.

NBS is right - no way you can hit 25mph (40kph) on anything other than a road bike unless going straight downhill.

As for the cost? Road bikes range from $300 to $13000, depending on quality. What is your budget? Next is a very low end bike and if you want something equivalent in a road bike, I would go used.

I'm not entirely certain, but I'm fairly confident you can just get larger gearing in the front.....ask your local bike store.

The road-bike is always going to have taller gears, lighter weight and skinnier tires that will lend towards higher potential speeds. Are you trying to go faster with a greater challenge on dirt roads or are you taking your MTN bike to the asphalt?

Not to butt in here but im on the market for a fairly inexpensive mountain bike but a good one at that. any suggestions?

What price range?

The Giant Trance X2, X1 or XO are awesome bikes....unbeatable for the money. I have the XO...the Juicy 7 brakes are unbelievable, the new XTR shifters are flawless (never had a ghost shift of hesitation yet), the suspension is great and the tubeless tires are sweet. The XO will set you back about $3,500 but the X1 or X2 are much less.

You can also find a few good deals on some 07's or even 06's if they still have them laying around. But you know the old saying: you get what you pay for....

Sorry but im a bit ignorant here when it comes to bikes. Like the past week iv been riding with a friend on his extra bike, and i love it! I personally only have a Cologno road bike bought in 85' and it was my dads that we got over hauled and back in working order. So i dont know prices

But is about 2 grand the norm or do they make them cheaper? if you under stand my question.

You have a 1985 Colnago? Does it have the Campagnolo Super Record components?

As for mountain bikes, you can get a very nice bike for 2K (US), but I would recommend renting one at first and/or going less expensive ($1000 - 1500) to make sure you are really interested in this.

As for components, Shimano components are standard and if you get it with LX (less expensive) or XT (more expensive) it will be fine. XTR stands for racing which is probably not necessary for you.

Giant, Specialized, Cannondale, Trek all make a wide range of bikes. See what your local bike shop has to offer. And don't forget used. Bikes have a big depreciation and if you buy it from a bike store it will be in good mechanical condition and quite reasonable.

I'm guessing you wouldn't want to go less than $500 new for either one, maybe closer to $700 for a new road bike. I bought a used road bike for $450 and it was 5 years old or so. Go to a real bike shop and get their input. They can size you and point you in the right direction. Specialized, Canonndale and Trek are a few good names but there are many, many more. Go to your local bike shop and talk to them and see what they have to offer. Good luck, Greg

You are correct sir. It does have those components.

Seeing how i am completely new to biking and there are SOOOOOOOO many different bikes and stuff on the manufacturers you suggested sites, what am i looking for? I mean i know a lot of them have different bells and whistles but is there any features i should look for to help narrow my searches?

Here are your choices:

Frame: Aluminum, steel or carbon fiber in increasing price. For you, I'd recommend aluminum. Steel frames are becoming rarer.

Components: There are three major manufacturers of components; Shimano, Campagnolo and Sram. For you, Shimano 105 is fine, Ultegra is even better. Dura-Ace is unnecessary. Comparably, Sram Rival or any Campagnolo model would be fine, but don't spend the money to get Chorus or Record as they are way expensive.

Wheels: Any wheels that come on any bike over $700 will be fine. All will have radial spokes, quick release hubs, and sealed bearings. Mavic Aksium is fine; Ksyrium is even better but there are lots of good models.

I would recommend a 53/39 crankset, not a compact or triple as you live in Florida and look like you don't need the granny gears.

Go to a local bike shop and see what you can get for $700 - 1500, depending on your budget.

There's a lot of good deals on used bikes. Lots of guys like to keep buying new toys each year and eventually they start blowing-out their inventory.

I bought it yesterday lol. I got a Specilized Rockhopper with discs for $600 and one of our local shops after spending the weekend looking and riding different ones. I plan on testing it today if the weather permets
