What will protein do for me?

I've been working out 3 days a week for the last 6 months, and it's working OK so far. I run stairs for 20 minutes for warm-up, then do a combination of yoga, weight training, and kick boxing. My goals are overall fitness, weight loss, and maybe gain a little muscle definition. I'm 55, so I'm not trying to be a monster. The personal trainer we started with suggested adding protein powder to my regular diet, so I mix it in the non-fat yogurt and fruit smoothies I make. I'm 5'10". 203 lbs. and have lost 20 lbs and 6" off of my waist since I started training. Long term goals are strength and endurance to hold of the ravages of age as long as I can. Is the protein powder a good idea, or overkill? Thanks for any input!

yes it is.

Yes it is- a good idea? The powder I'm using is 21 grams of protein, and I have one serving a day. The package says 1-3 servings a day (well duh, they want to sell me more).

I believe that protein powder has it's place. Def POST workout and some take it PRE workout as well. Try not to replace whole foods though.

It will help you recover from your workouts a little faster, as well as provide good calories to help with muscle gain. On a side note, 20lbs and 6" is great progress for 6 months!

I say go for the protein powder, best suited after workouts.

So the timing of the protein is important. I have mine about 5 hours prior to my work-out. I guess I need to adjust my schedule, and have it afterwards. Since I mix it with skim milk, I don't think it would sit well if I had it right beforehand. Thanks for the input!

I took someone's advice on here and eat 2 hardboiled eggs (one is just whites) and oatmeal an hour before I work out and immediately afterwards for recovery take my protein shake with fruit for my insulin spike (which will move the protein to your muscles faster).
