I need to develop better eating habits versus eating what is convenient.

What are some good things to eat that promote health and is safe for weight loss?

I'm tinkering with Garden of Life's powdered food to make shakes with as it is cold pressed, organic and has lots of greens.

I just need to figure out some safe things to eat besides just doing salads.

G-BOMBS

Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds (chia, flax, hemp, sunflower)

All of these foods are very high in nutrients, and low in calories. The more you fill up on these foods, the less room you will have for junk food, your immune system will have the nourishment it needs to function at an optimal level and fight disease, and you will shed weight faster than you could ever imagine.

Salad is an awesome start, so long as you aren't dumping 400-700+ empty calories of ranch dressing on it. I also enjoy steaming veggies and then adding them to a tiny bit of pasta, make fruit and veggies smoothies (without powdered, processed 'food'), and eat unlimited quantities of my favorite fruits and carrots when I can't resist junk foods.

I got that acronym from Joel Fuhrman, and can proudly say that I am a 'nutritarian'. Look it up!! After learning about nutritional science I lost 40 pounds (all I had to lose), have kept it off for 4 years, feel better than I ever have, and sleep well at night knowing my body is armed with nature's symphony of phytonutrients that are necessary to stop cancer, heart disease, and diabetes in their tracks. Good luck :)

So, all there any decent alternatives for salad dressing?

A salad needs a little dressing up ya know...

Yes! There are!

Here is one I got from Joel Fuhrman.s book called 'the end of dieting'. The dressing is called Orange sesame dressing.

3 tablespoons unhulled sesame seeds, divided
¼ cup raw cashew nuts, or 2 tablespoons raw cashew butter 2 oranges, peeled
2 tablespoons blood orange or white wine vinegar
Orange juice, if needed to adjust consistency

Toast the sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium high heat for 3 minutes, mixing with a wooden spoon and shaking the pan frequently. In a high-powered blender, combine 2 tablespoons of the sesame seeds and the cashews, oranges, and vinegar. If needed, add orange juice to adjust consistency. Sprinkle remaining tablespoon of sesame seeds on top of salad. Serving suggestion: Toss with mixed greens, tomatoes, red onions, and additional diced oranges or kiwi
.

I've tried this out, it's really good! I didn't toast the seeds though. He has a bunch of recipes like this that taste great and don't have any empty calorie oils that add unnecessary fat with no nutrients to your body.

My favorite dressing is simple and doesn't take much time. I add lots of cracked pepper, Apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, and a couple dashes of Tabasco that tastes great to me!!

The biggest problem with salads for most people is the dressing. Every salad at TGI Friday's except for one has more calories that a burger fruits, and soda. Not good. For example, at the restaurant I work at now they have a blue cheese salad wedge. If you break it down calorically, there is maybe 20 kcal in the 1/4 head of iceberg lettuce, 40 kcal of tomatoes (both good high nutrient sources!), and then they dump at least 600 kcal if dressing, another 300 kcal of blue cheese crumbles (mostly empty calories), and another 100-200 kcal of bacon. In effect, you have a plate of 'food' that has ~1000 bad calories and only a mere 60 good, high nutrient calories. It's sad. I see people order that thinking they are making a healthy choice when in reality they are better off ordering fried fish+ chips, which tastes better and would have a very similar effect inside your Dr. Fuhrman would say what's the point of ordering that salad, you may as well just forget the lettuce and drink the blue cheese dressing straight from the bottle!

If you do decide to try blending vinegar and fruits up in a blender, add a little bit of nuts... they make it thick and creamy and it tastes awesome! Also, it's good to have a little bit of healthy fats with lots of veggies because it helps some of the fat soluble vitamins and nutrients get absorbed better during digestion.

Hope that helps!

Well Mark a great post indeed and I couldn't agree with him more when he says "say what's the point of ordering that salad, you may as well just forget the lettuce and drink the blue cheese dressing straight from the bottle! It is the lack of
1) peoples knowledge of healthy food leaves a lot to be desired. Ignorance basically but, it is not their fault and
2) A failure to realise what these foods are actually doing to them when consumed on a regular basis!

I agree with you here. "Dressing is messing" with good honest and healthy foods. I have a website all about the natural approach to weight loss. That certainly does not help, I know as I was guilty of it especially when I became disabled

Your diet should include multipart carbohydrates such as natural oatmeal, sweet potatoes and brown rice. Vegetables, fruits and salads should make up a large proportion of your diet. And try to avoid fatty, deep fried, and foods full of sugar.

Everything I need to know about how to eat healthy. What is the way of eating will improve health and helps to lose weight naturally and feel better every day? I am about 80 KG Please recommend me a diet Chart. It will be helpful for me if you tell me the proper diet and exercise plan.

Hello, I just joined and have a few pounds to lose but its very hard. This is a good list but I would like to add more protein to the list. What do you think?

Can you gimme your details - Weight, Height, Age? The amount of protein and carbs you need depend upon these three factors. Another important factor is the amount of activity.

Not sugar, just only vegs and sport! ;)
But what do you think about the vegetables that can lose their useful properties after thermal treatment ?
