Weight-Loss what to do about catered events?

courage to be

I'm going to a dinner tonight, where the food is planned, and I have no idea what it will be...

how do you prepare for events like that? do you save calories? do you just take the night off? do you try to guestimate how many calories what you are eating has?

I really want to stay within my limits, but don't know how to make wise choices =(

small spoonfuls of what looks the best to you

scope the entire buffet first - and then settle for what looks really good that you wouldn't normally have...

and have at least half your plate be vegetables if it all possible..

Enjoy and yes you do know how tomake good choices - just tell yourself that you do know how..

Yeah healthy as possible and small servings is the way to go if you are going to eat there.

You can as well get a good meal in before hand and take some snacks of your own along. Don't ever feel like food somewhere is your only options, you have the control, give yourself the power.

well i ended up having a piece of grilled vegetable lasagna, and then the tossed salad w/ a vinaigrette... and i had only one small slice of bagette and one chocolate chip cookie. I'm pretty proud of myself. I could have done without the cookie though =(

One cookie won't sabotage you, don't feel too bad. It's a "once in a while" food and you only had one and not a handful of 5. You should feel great that you can enjoy yourself and have the control not to have gone overboard.

Oooooh, an edumacational opportunity!

Use the wonderful research tool at your fingertips (Internet search) and go looks up the foods you ate that you don't know tha calories of, then you will have an idea of what you took in. For lasagna, most of the calories don't usually come from the meat, but from the cheese, oils, and pasta, so if it tasted decadent, it probably was. ;)
Even then, most recipes I have seen work out to 500-1000 calories per "slice", so counting a bad one then, yeah, you probably went over. The good news is "it probably wasn't the cookie" :D

No stress on this, it's just one meal, it's not going to kill your food plan; and Leigh P. above is right. Small servings and healthy choices are the way to go here, and preferably you should snack right before going there, or even on the way there (if you can do it without making a mess of your nice clothes!) to help prevent any cravings.
I assume you weren't going for the food, it sounded like an unwelcome incidental effect of the event.

Tomorrow is another day. :D
