Sport What raw fruit and veg do you eat

Sport Fitness
Since starting to try to be more healthy since the start of the year, I've started eating more fruit, both for the vitamins and to fill me up. I was wondering what raw fruit and veg other people eat and how much of it.

At the moment I'm trying to eat at least 5 portions of fruit a day, such as apples, pears, bananas and oranges. A wider range would be nice, but other stuff is more expensive, so only eat it occasionally. Also snacking on more raw carrots and peppers.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to eating more then 5 portions of fruit a day?

I eat a lot of apples, oranges, pears, bananas. I also like dried apricots and prunes.

I guess I don't eat a lot of raw veggies, mostly I cook them. I do like raw beets with a little vinegar though...carrots are good raw

For raw snack time, throw them down-

apple and bananas (too many I am thinking) and grapefruit

coliflower, carrots, and cabbage

Gooch, if you happen to look back here. How do you feel about me eating 3-4 bananas a day? Are they fattening? I eat them because they are yummy.

Spinach, cabbage, radishes, onions, carrots, broccoli, apples, oranges, any kind of berries, grapes

I make salads for lunch almost everyday and include all the above veggies except obviously broccolli.

I also steam just about every veggie you can think of.

Also in the summer watermelon, cantelope, honeydew. Not sure of the nutritional value of melons though.

Lots of tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, lettuce, oranges, and pears.

Any fruit or veggie i have in the house really.

Uncooked stuff:

I eat blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries with yogurt and nuts for breakfast. I consume avocado fairly often. I put raw spinach, greens, and sometimes broccoli in salads and sandwiches.

Not-quite-raw stuff:

I sometimes put spinach and/or broccoli on a homemade pizza or in pasta sauce at the very end of baking/cooking. Basically, I'm just heating it a bit but not really cooking it. Green vegatables are generally not as healthy when cooked. I also tend to lightly cook/bake bell peppers.

Cooked stuff:

Unless it's in a sald or sandwich, I'll often cook or bake onions and tomatoes with the rest of my meal. Onion and tomatoes are supposedly helped (or at least not hurt) nutritionally by cooking them a bit.

I have a vege garden which i grow:

Beans
Patatos
Tamatoes
Silverbeet
Brocolli
Letuce
Parsnip and carrot
Onions
Capsicums etc

a few others and random times during the year.

The area I live in is prodominantly horticultural with lots of orchards that grow everything but real exotic fruits like mangos, mellons and bananas

On one hand they are a good whole, natural food...on the other hand they are relatively high GI. If you don't notice additional fat storage or the "buzz and crash" effect (which I doubt would happen) I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's hard to go wrong with whole fruits and vegetables

...and with all the running you do the potassium sure couldn't hurt ya

Yea I love bananas, but when i eat fruit or veggies i'm looking for a low-calorie snack to keep me full..and bananas aren't exactly low calorie..which is why i stick to carrots, lettuce, broccoli, etc.

I love Banana's and Grapefruit. I consume more grapefruit though. I eat apples, but dont care for them much. I also eat tomatoes (which is a fruit) raw inbetween meals sometimes. I also eat prunes and apricots.

I also eat raw carrots, cucumbers, and lettuce, to name only a few items.

Best wishes to everybody!

i generally eat ALL my vegetables raw. never liked them a lot when they were cooked when i was growing up. and besides cooking them get rid of a large portion of vitamins and minerals (besides tomato of course, which goes up!)
one of my favourite memories was running around in my grandmas garden, and just picking beans of the vines or a cucumber.

if im snacking, ill go into the fridge and eat a capsicum like an apple, or wash some broccoli and chow that down.

None.

I try to sneak in a few raw fruits now and then but, I'm not suppose to. I have severe allergies to all three major grasses so there are many fruits and vegs I am not allowed to eat at all, and then there are those I can eat but only cooked.

So I stick mainly with cooked vegs and if I want fruit, pasteurized drinks like superfoods, or the like.

I think the more fruit and veg you can get, the better! Especially veg :D

Cheers,
Diane

Hi,

My fruity favs are blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, pink lady apples, pears, grapes and kiwi.

Raw veg favs are celery, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers (red orange & yellow), cucumber and baby carrots. I usually eat them with home made hummus. :)

I love lightly steamed green beans, asparagus, broccoli and kale. Raw veg is much harder to digest (for me anyway). I usually steam way more than I will eat for one meal and eat them cold the next day.

I agree with Diane, the more veg the better!

But sugar from fruit is natural, so you should be able to eat as much as you want, right? This question is best asked of fruitarians - people who eat nothing but raw fruits. It is not uncommon for a strict fruitarian to eat five bananas and five dates for breakfast, one large canteloupe for lunch, and five large peaches for dinner.

Regardless of which approach is taken, I have not met a single strict fruitarian of more than two years who didn't have significant health challenges. The most common challenges are dental decay, osteoporosis, wasting of muscle tissue, inability to maintain a healthy weight, chronic fatigue, skin problems, thinning hair, weakening nails, and excessive irritability.

How could you live like that? I'd be craving steak within the day or at least a big plate of pasta! Think there health problems may have more to do with what they are not eating, rather then eating to much fruit.

Still some good points about sugars, so thanks for the link.

Dont be silly tribul, go find scholarly articles instead of some asian dude :p
matt182 I didn't realise you are an extremist. The Aussie Feds are hot on your trail like the sheriff in smokey and the bandit.:p
