The best deterrent Ive used was egg shells round the plants to stop slugs. However you'll need an awful lot of egg shells so may I suggest you visit somewhere that sells aquariums and buy a bag of the gritty sharp stones that people put in the bottom of aquariums it works just as well. I've not known of plant that works as well.
