What my students know

As some of you know I teach phys ed and health to middle school and high school. Here are what my students will walk away knowing this year-

*What propriocepters are and specifically what the GTO is and how it works.
*The difference between aerobic and anaerobic activity
*What macro and micro nutrients are and their functions in the body
*How to find their BMR and activity level to gauge their kcal needs
*What the a kcal really is
*Why fad diets don't work
*Why they shouldn't be scared of carbs and fats and how to choose fats and carbs wisely
*How fiber impacts insulin levels
*The breakdown of kcals for protein, fat, and carbs
*How to read a food label
*The difference between ST and FT fibers
*The definition of hypertrophy and atrophy
*The four levels of heat disorders
*How the CNS impacts strength
*The functions of the CNS and what it is and how it corresponds with the muscular and skeletal system
*The functions of the muscular system
*The functions of the skeletal system
*The difference between cardiac, voluntary, and involuntary muscles
*The different joints
*How a muscle contracts
*The difference between flexion and extension
*How resistance exercise impacts bone density
*Various exercise myths like the stunting of growth from squats
*The difference between primary movers, antagonists, and stabilizers

I think that covers it. I look forward to next year when I have an entire year with them rather than just half a year.

My gym teacher is a certified personal trainer and is the freshman football coach. But we don't get to learn all that =\ Lucky students haha

After reading that, my school definitely needs a better PE teacher..

I think most schools do. In my health and fitness class freshman year is when I learned the most as far as exercise and nutrition. It was taught by a male and a female (who I don't remember being very useful). But the male I remember telling us about weights and how to stretch. It was also the first place I heard about the eating every 4 hours thing. It wasn't as detailed as your class evo but it was the first time in school where many eating/working out myths were dispelled.

Can you move to Norway?

some schools don't even have PE anymore....

I know. It's a shame too. I'm working on some grant paper work to get about $10,000 in for equipment. When I started teaching these classes, I wanted to give the students a lot of knowledge taht applied more towards teh kinesiology rather than strict biology and physiology. I taught it a lot like I was taught through my various kinesiology classes.

I just finished gutting out one of the rooms by the gym, and should have a very good weight room by 08 that I can offer as a class. I'll be doing it as a strength and conditioning class in which we'll do agility ladders, hurdles, sprints, weights, etc

Yeah, if only we learnt that much. In GCSE we do have classes, but in practical we never learnt any of that.

hey evo, my bestfriend used to work as a grant writer, do you need any help with your stuff?

What I need more than anything are links or numbers to places that offer grants for people in my situation. the one I'm working with right now has me ready to pull my hair out because they want statistics for every school in my district and that's just the surface.

I think it's wonderful you're teaching them that Evo.

I never recall PE including any actual teaching, more just dodgeball, running laps and stuff. Even health class didn't get into any of that. Maybe if people actually taught that, there wouldn't be so dad-gummed many fatass kids running around.

Maybe if you tell the school you want to train them specifically for football, then they would throw money at you.:p

Ya I remember all you had to do was dress and be able to run the mile in a certain time and you passed P.E. Of course dodgeball on Fridays was awesome!

The only thing I remember from Health class is that we listened to a bunch of songs and how they pertained to drugs. Walk like an Egyptian, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, etc

They took dodge ball out of a lot of schools, sissys.
