Sport What muscles get broken down first?

Sport Fitness
I'm just a little curious, but how long exactly does it take for your muscles to start breaking down. I was told by my health teacher that if a muscle isn't used against decent resistance in 48 hours, it will begin to break down.

Also, which muscle groups get hit first? Kind of a warning, like, "hey you're not doing enough here!! I'm shrinking" warning?

I would think the arms and abs because they are such small muscles. But I don't know...

Oh, and merry (late) Christmas to everyone!:biggrinsanta:

you're health teacher is wrong. Muscles won't start to break down that fast. I've heard that it can take as long as 3 weeks before serious de-training starts to set in.

as for what muscles go first, I don't think it works like that. It's like fat, you won't just take off your stomach, tighs, butt, etc. it's more all over.

Ok thanks Karky.

What about protein deficiency? Like..if you only get 100 grams in for the day?

I'm just asking because the last 4 days has been nothing buy bad foods for the body and I doubt protein was high on that list.

don't worry about it, aslong as it doesn't happen that often. If you don't eat enough protein it could probably start happening faster, but it's only 4 days so I wouldn't be worried.

FWIW....

I was pretty cut about 5 weeks ago. Since then I have had very little chance to workout hard. I have done some cardio, again...not like normally do. The definition in my upper body has deteriorated quickly, and the peak of my bies has flatened.....it's pretty sad really.

It has we itching to get my workouts going! Heck, I have a full home gym and haven't had time to get in there

If you have time to post on this forum, you have time to go workout.

See, that's what I'm afraid of!

Thats pretty rediculous, considering after resistance training the post 48 hours is repair - making and rebuilding the muscle making it bigger.

I think what your trying to say is muscle atrophy. In which the muscle gets smaller as it is doing what fits its homeostasis level. This generally occurs after 2 weeks of not activating the muscles through resistance. Dont be so worried.

That does set my mind at ease.

I wouldn't be able to go 3 weeks without doing SOMETHING anyways...I'd go crazy:jump1:

Ive had 3 operations on me knee and after each one i built my muscle right back up but after each operation i couldent move my knee joint for 2 weeks and it completely died down again to a really tight stringy feeling. walking up stairs was a workout for me :p

3 operations already? what where they for smithmachine?

ACL, meniscus.....

Ive had two and hope to god it doesnt happen again, at least for a long time. Im a pretty injury prone person :p my shoulder joint is ridiculously loose :) probably because i use to always sublux my shoulder cuz it felt so good, now i make sure i focus on my cuffs at least once a week..

Yeah, because the 30 second walk to the computer is the same thing as a 10 or 20 minute drive to a gym

If you actually read his post, you would have seen he has a home gym.
You can have a 12 hour job, kids, and chores and STILL have time to workout one way or another.

I do agree with Phate...if you really want to get in shape, you WILL find the time to do it.
