What keeps you motivated?

Keeping up the habit of working out every day is tough for most of us. What are some ways you keep yourself motivated to hit the gym on your off-days?

Why would you hit the gym on your off days?

by off days he doesnt mean rest days, he means days you dont feel motivated to workout. He's asking what keeps you motivated to work out on those days.
For me, i have a terrible voice in my head everyday i do not work out (besides scheduled rest days) that says "hey fat ass- MOVE! you're gonna get fat!"

Hey blackanddom,

Thanks for the clarification. :) Do you feel that - with time - your motivation changes? Did you have that "voice" when you first started working out?

Set yourself some goals i.e.

- I want to do more curls than the "curls are for gals" boyz at the gym. :p
- I want to reduce my body fat to 10% to have that beach body.
- I want to get stronger drug-free.
- I want to get in shape to fit into that tiny trouser in my wardrobe. :D

LOL, I like your phrasing! You had mentioned that you want to get stronger drug-free.. do you take supplements?

The "curls for the gals" is obviously a joke, I don't like the way bodybuilders think that biceps deserve a "biceps day" or that you have to hit your muscle from 7 different angles to grow.

On a serious note I don't take anything other than whey, fish oil or a multi. Most dudes take pre-workout stimulants, something intra-workout and then something post-workout. They are additionally on other stuff or are on juice and whatever else. That's not for me.

I for the most part get that feeling if I dont exercise on a daily basis, one thing I found to continue to help me stay motivated during points when I exercise to keep me going is listening to the right type of music when you work out, run, or just exercise.

I personally listen to metal-core type stuff because that always gets me pumped and make me want to keep going.

What keeps me going is the all round improvements on my body, it gives me the drive to want to improve more and more.

Music is the biggest motivator as it helps to drive out the aches and pains while I crank up the speed and resistance on various machines. Move to the beat, focus on the beat, make sure you enjoy the tune. This works on a short term level.

But when it comes to the longer term motivation- when you have a day where your supposed to workout but you would rather be doing a maths exam from yesteryear then being at the gym I think the best thing is not to treat it as a question.

Its when you think to yourself: 'I don't want to go to the gym' and then give yourself the option of not going that its hard.

If you take the stand that although you don't want to go to the gym, your going anyway, its not a question, not an option, its going to happen, somehow you don't think or think less about how much you don't want to go, instead you stop thinking about it as its not helping you. You just put your best effort in, focus on the end mark and its somehow alot eaiser then if you had gone along thinking " I don't want to be here..."

I agree that it has a lot to do with mentality! Life - in general - goes smoother with a positive attitude. You mentioned that music is your biggest motivator. What kind of music do you listen to?

Scout,

My fitness goals that I have set for myself keeps me motivated on my off days. For example I am very toned and in great shape because I do HIIT training consistantly. However, there is still a little fat that I am working on gettng rid off.
On my off days I just do it! I pick up a rope and start to skip and eventually my workout routine takes over and I eventually forget it was an off day. When I am finished working out I am glad that I did the workout.

I workout on a near daily basis because for me its more about how I want to move rather than what effects I want on my health. I'm a martial artist and I love the moves and skills involved. Its learning and improving those skills that drive me.

Also I cycle for transport and its my way to get away. I don't even think of that as exercise, probably because its a means to other needs.
