Sport what is so bad about "processed carbs?"

Sport Fitness
I always see people on this board bashing things like bread and crackers b/c they're considered "processed carbs." Honestly, I eat a lot of sandwiches w/ 100% whole wheat bread so I would just like to know what is so bad about these types of carbs.

Many processed carbs have very little natural vitamins or oils left once they have been processed so they are mostly useless calories, and many have very high glycemic indexes, meaning they tend to spike blood sugar levels, which signals your body to store fat. Even though they may say whole wheat on the label, you never know for sure what elese they might put in prepared foods: transfats, lots of salt, high fructose corn syrup or other sugars, "enriched" flour, etc. You just can't beat good old fruits and vegetables as the best source of carbs with most of the natural vitamins and other trace nutrients still intact.

because processing removes natural enzymes, vitamins, and quite frankly turns the food into something the body wasn't exactly designed to digest efficiently.

eat only whole foods, and you'll understand the difference, because you'll FEEL the difference.

Derwyddon,

thanks for adding that, because that's the simplest, best reason to skip the processed carbs. whacky blood sugar levels make people extra lazy.

In addition, whole grains are lower on the glycemic index, and they'll keep you full longer because your body digests it at a slower rate - thus it allows you to eat less calories without feeling hungry.
