Weight-Loss What is it ok to eat and not to eat when dieting?

I've been on a diet and working out trying to get down to 160 for a 3-4 weeks now. Anyway I've had cravings for things like ice cream. Nothing hardcore unhealthy like burger king, but small things like a donut, ice cream, etc.

Is it ok to eat those things in moderation or will it completely throw off my diet?

theoretically - what matters is the amount of calories in a day - not necessarily where those calories are coming from... but calorie laden foods tend to be nutritional wastelands so while they shouldn't be banned - other things would be better choices...

read around the forum - there's lots of helpful information in the stickied threads...

I was thinking about buying some low-fat Breyers ice cream with 130 calories and 4.5 grams of fat. I don't think that is too bad, do you?

If you want ice cream the Dryers slow churned is good. It has like 1/2 the fat and 1/3 of the calories as regular ice cream (I think). It is like 120-130 calories for 1/2 cup. You have to watch the fat content in your goodies. Even though they may be low in calories that doesn't mean they are good for you or your diet for that matter.

Long as you are satisfied wiht what one serving is - go for it... 1/2 cup of ice cream isn't enough for me so I pass on it these days...

I'm a label reader - one of the ingredients that I will not buy anythig with is High Fructose Corn Syrup - but that's me.. do what works for you...

If you like popcycles then Popcycle brand makes awesome sugar free ones that don't even taste sugar free and they are very satisfying for the sweet tooth. I usually have just one and I am done craving. Good luck.

I could eat a bowl of ice cream. I don't eat much during the day, so I could subtract a couple things out of my daily diet to make up for the extra calories.

just be careful some fo those things you're cutting, might be nutrients your body needs. you might want to keep track of your calories in a program like or one ofthe other bazillion free calorie tracking sites available on the web.

My diet consists of turkey on wheat with lettuce or grilled chicken on wheat with lettuce for dinner every day, fruit, pretzels, and something else like a couple twizzlers. I think it would be ok to add a bowl of ice cream now and then right?

Even if it is only once a week I wouldn't care though. I don't consume THAT many calories per day and I exercise 3 times a day and lift once every day. It doesn't sound like it would throw off my diet but I'm not sure. I'm down to 175(from 188) and am trying to get to 160.

I encourage you to look up at the easiest nutrition guidelines stickied at the top of this section.

You can have ice cream, you can have whatever you want really, but you need to create some sort of structure. For example..

-Make sure you have protein with ever meal
-Make sure you are getting a variety of nutrient in your food
-Make sure that for the most part all your other food is healthy and whole
-A pure cheat is better than a diet cheat

For example a day could look like this...

Bowl of kashi Cereal with fruit
Whole grain sub from Subway
Weight Watchers muffin and yogurt
2 cups of low fat ice cream

or it could look like this

1 egg to 2 egg whites with 2% cheese, bowl of bananas and strawberries
Grilled Chicken and Snap Peas with Red Potato's
Lean Ground Burger on Wrap with Broccoli/ 1 Cup of Strawberry Ice Cream Full Fat
Turkey and Ham Salad with Peanut Butter on Apple for desert

Now which seems better to you? The highly processed, crap carbs, low protein meals or the protein rich, nutrient filled variety meals?

Don't let cooking be your weakness and let imagination be your only stopping point.

The thing is I don't eat 4 meals a day. In fact I only really eat one "meal" and the rest is just minor snacking. I don't have the appetite for more than that and to be honest, I'm too busy working out, excersing and working with the rest of my time to eat anyway.

I find that after I play basketball, run or lift weights my appetite disappears for a couple hours. I could be pretty hungry and run, and when I'm done I don't feel hungry at all. I work weird hours so I don't really eat a breakfast. This is my current diet:

Wake up at 2pm, very minor hunger at around 5 pm - eat a yogurt
8pm is when my full and only real hunger kicks in - eat usually turkey on wheat or grilled chicken. Sometimes I'll have lean steak and veggies.

Somewhere between 9-10 pm, bowl of fruit and some pretzels

11 pm - work and bring some pretzels with me to eat while working.

Get home at 7:30 am and sleep.

I don't eat the same things every day, but I don't have great variety either. I'm not a creative eater, and my tastes are very limited. I dislike a lot of different foods.

I'm getting tired of the chicken, turkey and steak though. I wish there was something I could substitute that I like, but I've become calorie obsessed and I think that is hurting me more than helping me, because I'm starting to have trouble stomaching the same food all the time.

I don't even know if my daily diet is even ideal for losing weight. I'm losing it, but I'm trying to get my minor gut down to a completely tone stomach and it is getting slimmer, but very very slowly. Maybe that is just how it is, I don't know.

You could try some soy options, that gives you something a little different as far as the protein goes.

Eating once a day isn't that good for your body - unless your snacking on a protein and a carb throughout the day for your "snacks".

Not that I'm an expert, but have read Body For Life and that lifestyle promotes eating 6 times a day. Mostly focusing on a protein and a carb, then of course filling in with a leafy veggie of sorts.

I think eating ice cream once in awhile is ok, but of course you have to know you are able to stop at one serving. There are lots of ice cream products on the market - some with no sugar added (of course then you get into the debate about sweetners) and some that are individual servings of 100 cals. That's what I go with - not because I don't like sweetners, but because of the stuff they use in the chocolate of sugar free ones just doesn't mix with my tummy.

I think eating the right foods is better for the best results you can hope for - and your body with thank you. :)

Good luck!

I eat ice cream. I've even been guilty of putting away about 2,000+ calories worth of pizza. Yet I have still dropped near 30 pounds. Sure, those meals slow my weightloss down as they put me in a calorie surplus for the day or even week, but over time it all washes out. I may have a surplus for the day, but a deficit for the week which means over the week, I've lost weight.

Hello,

There is nothing much to shout about the diet. Stop day dreaming of the variety of foods you will have to foregos. As strict dieting on the principles will only leave you that torturous option.
If you are a vegetarian, the choices available are further cut down. Basically you cut out virtually all carbohydrate from your diet and increase your protein and fat intake. So you cut out things like pasta, bread, rice and alcohol, yet you eat unlimited amounts of meat, cheese and butter. Followers of the diet claim that initial days are fine but then as time increases you get sick and tired of the same kinds of foods.

Thanks!!

Just popping in with a suggestion. Put the cool whip free in between two low fat cinnamon graham crackers and freeze. Its a delicious "ice cream sandwhich" that tastes delicious.
