What is Happening to Me?

I'm at a loss for what's happening to me. In the span of three days, I've gained 6 pounds and it seems the pounds keep coming; I'm looking to determine why.

I did drink vodka the night before day 1, so I'm factoring that in as well. However, the following days, I have eaten less than 1000 calories per day (which I know is unhealthy, but I just don't have an appetite!) And these foods include salad, Romaine lettuce, soy bean paste, and chicken, none of which I overindulged. I don't eat sweets and I run at least 2 miles each day. I drink close to 60 fluid oz of water each day as well. I'm not a health buff, so I have no idea what's going on. I DID do the Atkins diet for quite awhile, but I stopped doing that recently. I still don't eat much carbs; in fact, the only carb-heavy food I've eaten in the past few days was one slice of bread and chef salad. What's going on?

Are you keeping track of nutrients in any type of online journal... like if not i'd suggest it...

Are you certain you're eating what you think you'r eating - meaning -are you measuring everything accurately or just eyeballing it?

Carbs do not make you gain weight -it's total calories in the day... so carbs really aren't a factor... However, you might be high in sodium

What are your current stats - height/weight/age etc - and how long have you been trying to lose weight.

I strongly urge you to read the stickied threads around the forum --you will get lots of much needed information

Many people on no carb diets regain weight once they reintroduce the carbs. I've read this happens despite total calories. But you haven't really had that many carbs anyway so I dunno.

Do you normally eat so little? This sounds counterintuitive but there are many people who come here who gain or can't lose on an extremely low amount of calories. Obviously the body is in the starvation mode we hear about so often. To me it sounds like you need to eat more to get your metabolism back up to speed. If you usually dont eat so little and these past few days are an anomoly, then this probably wouldn't be applicable.

Just looking at the nutrition info for Soybean paste (which I assume is Miso paste)

Sodium 830mg in one tbs - that can add up to water retention... especially if you're using more than one tbs... and depending on what your current weight is - 60 ounces of water isn't going to do a lot to help flush the sodium out of you

Well, one of the reasons I stopped doing Atkins is because it required me to eat at least three meals a day. In fact, it was good to eat. And that was the most difficult part for me. Forcing myself to eat, that is. I'm used to eating only dinner with a small snack later. I hate eating breakfast and usually forget or don't care to eat lunch.

As for the soybean paste, it's not exactly Miso. It's a Ko-chu-jang bean paste with the following nutritional facts:

Serv. Size: 1 Tsp
Calories: 33
Fat Cal.: 9
Total Fat: 1g
Total Carb: 5g
Sodium:560mg
Sugars: 1g

I can see what you mean about the sodium though. So you think it's possible that my body is simply retaining all the water I drink? Will it continue to do so? I did notice that when I added the soybean paste to my diet, I started to gain the weight. Perhaps a coincidence, but I just don't feel like I had gained weight; it wasn't until I saw it on the machine that I realized. What would you suggest?

Well if you regularly only eat one meal and one snack and less than 1200 calories, then its obvious your not eating enough and that could very well be the cause of your troubles. Have you never heard of the body requiring a certain number of calories to function? I dont mean to call names, but you sound a bit anorexic to me. Eat a normal amount of calories for a while and see if eventually your metabolism starts to pick up again. I know its counterintuitive but your only other option is to cut your calories ever further. I know! Just dont eat anything at all for the next several months and maybe that'll do it! NOT!
