What is a good weight range for kettlbells? Husband and wife.

Hello,

My wife and I are talking about getting some kettlebells for home use. I am trying to figure out a good range. I've looked at a set that includes 10, 15, 20, 25 lbs but I wonder if 25 would be enough for me.

Also, how often would we need one for each hand (so, 25 lbs x 2 for example)?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm no expert on kettlebells -- the only thing I've ever used them for is high speed + high rep kettlebell swings in HIIT, in which case I was using little 4kg kettlebells even though I was deadlifting about 140kg. So, I know light kettlebells can be effective, depending on use. At one of the local powerlifting gyms in my area, they perform Ukranian deadlifts, in which they set up two boxes either side of the kettlebell so that the handle is level with the top of the boxes whent he KB is sitting on the floor, and use 20kg for as many reps as possible once a week for every lifter until the lifter can do barbell deadlifts of at least 200kg. That could mean doing 3x5 deadlifts one day at 160kg, and 50 UDLs at 20kg another day of the week. So again, you don't necessarily need a huge amount of weight with KBs to get an effective workout. I suppose, worst case scenario, you could get some heavier kettlebells down the line?

Depends what you want to be doing with them. I have 4kg to 32kg at 4kg intervals, 4kg is about 10 lb.
I don't have pairs, and do occasionally wish I had, but not often. They are pricey kit so would say get those you need only and buy others later,

I found that I needed heavier kettlebells than I thought I would. I'm female and bought a set of 3, 2.5/5kg/7.5kg, I ended up starting with the 7.5kg and used the 4kg for only one of the shoulder exercises. A lot of the things I did with the kettlebells utilised momentum and so I was able to lift heavier. I used the art of strength Newport DVD which is excellent btw and gave me a great workout. There was nothing in the DVD that required 2 kettlebells and they are quite expensive so you are better off to get a wider weight range than doubling up, you can always alternate sides. I would say I've almost outgrown my kettlebells after one use so definantly go heavier. I also found that my palms were red and sore when I finished so I bought lifting gloves, you definitely need them with kettlebells.
