What if I'm having troubles even reaching 1200 calories??

And before you tell me I'm nuts....it's not me, it's a medication. I just started on effexor and one of the side effects is loss of appetite and nausea. This morning I had to choke down a bit of cereal. Smoothies make me nauseated, protein shake makes me nauseated, toast, eggs, etc, etc, etc. Lunch, same deal. It's almost 2:00 and I've had about 600 calories today and still zero appetite. Prior to the medication I was consuming 1600 calories a day with 30-40 minutes of cardio 3 times a week with 2 weight training days and losing 2-4 pounds a week.

Quitting the medication is not an option.

Any suggestions?

It will get better as you get used to the meds. My H takes effexor and it took him about a month to stablise and be able to eat again.

This is one where you just have to push yourself through it - eat what you can and try to make sure that what you eat is nutritionally rich.

Hang in there because it will get better. :)

Has your hubby noticed any weight gain from it? It seems like all i can find on the internet is bad reviews in terms of weight on this medication and that worries me. My doctor as well as another doctor I went to had rave reviews on effexor and said it is weight neutral and often causes weight loss, so I'm confused as to why there's so many people saying they gained weight on it.

Most of all I'm looking forward to being and feeling like myself again!!!!

I was lurking and came across this post and I had to join to tell you what evil drug Effexor is. PLEASE read about this drug. Not from the maunfacturers but from actual people who have been on it. Google things like "effexor class action suit, effexor withdrawals" etc. I know so many people who this drug has really done bad damage to.

My mom was on Effexor for years (about 10 years I think.) It was quite literally a life-saver for her. There will always be people who experience adverse effects from a drug- presumably you would be in frequent contact with your doctor and would inform him/her if you were having issues with it. Anyway- my mom did actually experience some weight loss in the 1st few months, and neutral after that. Everyone reacts differently though. I do remember that her doctor warned her some people do gain weight, even though it's supposed to be weight neutral.

Oh- and she is currently going off of it. Yes, there have been some minor withdrawal symptoms, but nothing she hasn't been able to handle.

To be honest, I'm a little jealous! ... LOL

I wish I could eat next to nothing and not feel hungry. Where can I get that medication??
Haha J/P..... ;)

(but seriously, where?)

this may sound extremely stupid, but thinking about it, would taking a shot of maalox, pepto, tagament or something else help with settling the stomach down, or are there interaction issues?

Superstar>> WHY would you want to eat next to nothing?? Your body NEEDS FOOD TO LIVE and FUNCTION.

Oh, I'm joking. (kind of)

It's just I have an issue with OVEReating, which I'm working to get under control, so those pills could possibly help me curb my appetite.

"Those pills" are extremely powerful antidepressant medication. Even posting in jest about misusing them for controlling appetite is ... well ... I'm sorry to be so blunt but ... really stupid.

My ex takes Effexor and has for years. It has helped him a lot with depression and anxiety but it is NOT a fun drug to take. The withdrawal symptoms from the drug are well documented. The drug builds up in your system over time and missing even a single dose can cause side effects that are ... unpleasant at best and horrific at worst. The last time my ex missed one of his pills he spent the day in bed because the headache and light sensitivity was so bad.

They are the best possible pills for him - they do what others haven't been able to do, but I guarantee if there was something else that worked, he'd be on it in a heartbeat.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see that joking about taking a drug like this in order to curb your appetite is appropriate for the forum.

Wow.

Well, I didn't know that particular drug was for anti-depressants. But calm down, it's not like I'm actually going to take a drug like that; I don't have depression so it won't ever be prescribed for me. And there's no weight loss product on the market that can produce those symptoms.

So how about you take one of these :chillpill: and let's just kill that conversation.

Superstar>> Considering you recommended another poster on this board to eat 1000 calories or less to lose weight super fast, how were we to know that you weren't serious about trying something dangerous to lose weight?

I think you need to take a swig of your own advice and then swallow that chill pill yourself.

Whoa.

I recommended to somebody that they should eat 1000 cal or less????? You mean to tell me that I told somebody it was a good idea to eat 1000 calories or less?? Oh gosh, please tell me where I told somebody this...

And if you're referring to the post where I told somebody that the only way they would lose 70 lbs in one day was to eat 1000 calories or less, fyi, that was NOT a recommendation. That's just stating the facts. You really would have to eat that little to lose that amount of weight in that time. That doesn't mean I'm recommending it to them. And if you also read in that post I suggested to them what the calculations of what I discovered on a website said they should be eating and when they would lose the weight, which is a lot more reasonable. But I'm sure you missed that part....

So, from the dates I imagine you're about 1-2 weeks into your treatment now and hopefully the worst side effects have worn of. It is pretty common to have all sorts of really crappy side effects the first week or so.

Now first of all, as long as we're talking about a week or two, don't worry about it that much. You aren't going to fuck your body over by eating terribly little for a week or two, and I'm willing to bet you that the worst nausea and yawning and dry mouth and all the other common and absolutely wonderful side effect will pass over the first week or two :)

I've been on both the giving and receiving end of effexor and I can certainly empathize but hang in there, and try not to worry SO much about your diet the first weeks, focus on getting into the habit of taking the pills at the same time every day and getting a decent sleep rhythm going (probably with very vivid/abnormal dreams) and the appetite should return on its own.

If all the side effects continue and is disabling to your life you should under any circumstances talk to your doctor/psychiatrist and talk about the possibility of alternative SSRI's, there are quite a few to choose between and while effexor is often used due to it being one of the ones that help a pretty broad group of MDD and anxiety sufferers there are other SSRI's that can help.

The take home message is: don't sweat it, give it a little time and talk to your doctor if it persists. :)

And hey... get used to ignoring retards going "omg thats such a cool side effect of this and that" and other retards going "you just need to snap out of it" because them fools know fuck all about actually having a MDD or anxiety. :) I know that to me it just sounds like annoying buzzing in my ears now and not actual words.

What about drinks like Ensure or Boost? I used to drink them as a student when I didn't have time for real food. Try the high protein ones (I preferred vanilla). See if you can handle it.

The above is false. If that was the case then if I didn't eat for 3 days I wouldn't lose a single pound..want to take bets on that?
