what does starving do?

Hi,
Before you get worried, I am not starving myself. I am on a good diet, and I get all the things that I need with exercise. I was just wondering, if you didn't eat that much, what would happen? I mean not completely stop because then you would die. But if you had a little barely anything in your day to eat, what would you lose? A friend of mine says that it shrinks muscles, but I'm not sure about that. So, overall, what do you lose, what does it effect, and how bad is it for you? THANKS

Yes, your body would look to muscles(mostly proteins) as their energy source. Thats why dieting alone(as in starving yourself and no exercise) is a very bad idea.

Sorry if i sound stupid, but if you exercise a lot, will your muscles get sacrificed less when in starvation? Or will you just gain the weight from muscle and then lose it again? So its like an on going cycle or something?

I'll try and contribute what I remember. Low calorie diets were popular with oprah. You don't eat, and your body kind of canabalizes itself. It needs an energy source, and so it goes to protein and eats away your muscle. I've seen this happen personally. I got my tonsils taken out, could barely eat anything for a week, tried to hike a measley 4 miles after it was over and just about passed out. Don't starve yourself.

It takes hard work to build up good muscle, and what could take months to build up can be ripped down in a very short amount of time. Besides losing your muscle, your body kind of goes into a starvation mode. It needs to store all the energy it can because it's not being provided with that which it needs. So, it converts a lot more things to fat. Trust me, you will lose a ton of weight. So fast, a lot of times, that people have bags of loose skin hanging from their bones. But it will all come back in the end. You're body was built to survive...not starve itself into oblivion.

Eventually, the person builds up a lot of fat that usually excedes the amount they started with in the first place.

*babbles incoherently*

well... i am a college athlete that has suffered with an eating disorder. I can promise you that the less calories you consume, for a prolonged period of time, the more weight you will lose. HOWEVER!!!! this slows your metabolic rate down tremendously! Not eating the proper amount of calories will burn up muscle, not fat! I know that when I recovered from my problem I put on all the weight I had lost and more! So starving yourself is dangerous and an inappropriate way to lose weight!

not to mention the massive headaches and loss of energy you'd have.
