Weight-Loss What does chlorophyll do?

Chlorophyll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in most plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Its name is derived from Greek: ?????? (chloros "green") and ?????? (phyllon "leaf"). Chlorophyll absorbs light most strongly in the blue and red but poorly in the green portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, hence the green colour of chlorophyll-containing tissues like plant leaves.

I drink chlorophyll, I like the taste of washed mint gum :p

here are some of the benefits:

• It has been seen to help in the growth and repair of tissues.

• Chlorophyll helps in neutralizing the pollution that we breathe in and intake everyday - a good supplement for smokers

• It efficiently delivers magnesium and helps the blood in carrying the much needed oxygen to all cells and tissues.

• It is also found to be useful in assimilating and chelating calcium and other heavy minerals.

• It had been seen to have a good potential in stimulating red blood cells to improve oxygen supply.

• Along with other vitamins such as A, C and E, chlorophyll has been seen to help neutralize free radicals that do damage to healthy cells.

• Chlorophyll is also an effective deodorizer to reduce bad breath, urine, fecal waste, and body odor.

• It may reduce the ability of carcinogens to bind with the DNA in different major organs in the body.

• Chlorophyll may be useful in treating calcium oxalate stone ailments

• It possesses some anti-atherogenic activity as well.

• It can be used to treat infected wounds naturally.

Chlorophyll is not a vitamin - wishes's link to all-knowing Wiki gives a good summary of what it IS.

Amiba, I'm curious as to where your list of benefits came from.

I did a little research a while back about this (I knew a person taking chlorophyll) online (Google), and largely came up with commercial results (places that sell chlorophyll) promoting it's health benefits and citing studies (but not linking, or listing, specific studies or the institutions that supposedly conducted them) to prove it. WebMD turned up nothing tenable one way or another, although an article about wheat grass stated that it was unlikely the chlorophyll had anything to do with any its health properties.

Yahoo Answers had a similar question, and the selected answer was this:

"Chlorophyll does nothing to the body other than supply a source of nutrients.

C55H72O5N4Mg is it's rough formula, so you can see that chlorophyll is a source of carbon, hydrogen, and less so of oxygen, nitrogen and magnesium. These are elements that are common in all organic and inorganic foods...in much higher proportions than chlorphyll."

I wouldn't cite Yahoo Answers in a term paper, but that pretty much sums up some other stuff I read.

Finally, I took an advanced biology class for biology majors last year with a professor who was a nutritionist. We talked about chlorophyll extensively and we talked about nutrition extensively. And he never once mentioned any link between the two.

At this point it sounds like there are a lot of claims about chlorophyll, and not a lot of evidence to support those claims. Kind of like most natural supplements (I say this, and admit I take green tea extract).

P.S. Keep in mind you're ingesting chlorophyll anytime you eat a green plant.

well I've found it through the web in many sites, I love how it refreshes my mouth so I don't really mind if does anything else :p it makes water more bearable for me.

I particularly like this page because they addresses the things we both said. some people believe in it, others don't:

it works for me so guess you could say is like any remedy, it is all in the mind!
I also do yoga and I don't think it is curing me of anything- but what the hell. I enjoy it

The difference is yoga has real benefits =P

Yoga is great for you.

Nothing wrong with putting something in your water to make it taste better (like lemon, people claim lemon burns fat or some other gobbly gook, but really its a taste preference I think)

i always wondered if i could start a 'i used cyanide to help with weight loss! it works for me' list a bunch of random reasons why and see if anyone was stupid enough to go for it :)

Chlorophyll does provide some health benefit

People at risk for colon cancer may benefit from a chlorophyll supplement. Chlorophyll does inhibit haem-induced colonic cytotoxicity and subsequent adverse effects. A study on this was published in 2005 and can be found here

I think it goes to show that Chlorophyll does provide us with significant health benefit and holds more value then being just the 'green pigment' of plants. Yes, you do get chlorophyll from green vegetables but I don't think most people eat enough of them on a daily basis to achieve any sort of therapeutic results (the lettuce on your cheeseburger doesn't count).

If you're interested in adding more varied greens to your diet I'm going to be posting my 'universal' greens recipe on my blog at (MOD EDIT: Personal Blog Address removed) later today. I call it universal because it's a super simple and easy way to prepare swiss chard, kale or collard greens that's nutritious and delicious. I swear even your kids will like this.

If you're not one to cook well balanced meals on a daily basis then maybe a chlorophyll supplement couldn't hurt. I drink it in my water either way if only because I think it tastes good (cool and refreshing with a strong green tea flavor) and it gets me to drink more water ;).

Chlorophyll helps in neutralizing the pollution that we breathe in and intake everyday - a good supplement for smokers. It purifies the blood and the organism, cleaning it of toxins. It has antimutagenic and anti-carcinogenic properties so that it may be helpful in protecting your body against toxins and in reducing drug side effects.

Ridiculous statement. Chlorophyl is a protein that would be broken down like any other protein when it gets into our gut. Eating chlorophyl will not put the intact protein into your blood stream. How can it neutralize pollution? What pollution? Are you inhaling the chlorophyl into your lungs directly? I'm confused.

out of all the things to remember out of high school i remembered chlorophyll and what it did. why on gods green earth can i remember that but nothing else. i must have got a sticker or something.
