I'm going to a buffet on Sunday. So today I ate 700 calories instead of 1,500 calories. And Sunday I won't eat the rest of the day after the buffet.

What do you do? Over due it & not worry about it. Or do you cut back somewhere on your food?

Great question! I have the same delima. I am going to a Chinese buffet next weekend. Its my daughter's birthday, and it is the restraunt of her choice. I am so worried that I will completely blow my diet. I don't really know how best to approach to take. I have to go and eat...or I will hurt my daughters feelings (and I cant do that)....but I dont want to undo all the work I put in to this during the week.

Thanks for asking the question Troutman. I look forward to the suggestions as well! :)

I went & indulged and enjoyed. Hopefully not to much damage If I have it figured out right, by not eating anything else today & my 700 calories yesterday that would put me at 3700 calories for Sat. & Sun. That is only 700 Calores over my two day total. But the question is will it hurt me when I weigh in on Thurs.

I think a buffet is fine, as long as you don't go overboard. So often I leave a buffet feeling like I ate way too much and am rolling out of there. Quite often buffets have some healthier choices as well. But it's alright to take small portions of things you love (like ginger beef .. mmm...) Just eat in moderation. The last 2 buffets I've been to I've done better. Before I always figured I should get the most for my money. But now, I enjoy small amounts of the things I love, and a few healthy choices, and I stop when I'm satisfied. :)

Chinese food can be a good calorie splurge sometimes. Sometimes you just need a good fix!

I agree, Tam. Going to buffets doesn't have to be a bit ordeal, just take it slowly, and supposedly using the small side plates instead of the big dinner ones also helps to curb your eating because you can't take as much at one time (this is in theory, I always forget to do this myself when I'm at a buffet ;))

For the most part, I try to avoid them though.

As long as you don't go to buffets more than once or twice a month, you should be alright if you stick to your daily diet. Shocking your body once in a while is not too bad. Not only does our body need something different every once in a while, but we do to. We need to get out of the eating a raising a day mode every once in a while.

Treat yourself to a buffet. Get a handle on your weight loss and reward yourself. You do not have to starve yourself but if you are losing weight and undertand how to feed your body, you can reward yourself like this once a week with no problem. The hardest part in going to binge out at a buffet on Saturday evening, is know you can not do it on sunday, then on monday, then tuesday and wednesday. You have to have a good mindset. If you do, I do not see any problem in doing this.

Its now how much you eat, its WHAT you eat. While their really isn't anything healthy at a chinese buffet, I know they at least have vegetables and stuff you can fill up on. American buffet? Eat salads. Theres always a better choice in something to eat. Fill up on lo cal, then you'll be mostly full before you are tempted to hit the high cal items.

I have a strategy here. I don't generally like buffets (sneeze guard, anyone?), except the super fancy brunch ones and the ones at the nice new hotels in Las Vegas. Nothing stale here. So when faced with that, and yes, it's really tough, I frequently lose control and leave feeling uncomfortably full (and unbuttoning the top button of my pants - shame). Here is my strategy, yes it's just a bunch of tricks, but they work for me. First, wear the tightest pants you have. No joke. This makes you more aware of yourself, your body, and your stomach (and whether it's feeling too full). Next, start the buffet with a BIG salad with lots of veggies and very little dressing, or at least "lite" dressing, and a broth based soup if they have one. That is very low cal and helps fill you up faster. Next, select approximately 3 bite portions of anything you want to eat, even if it's your favorite thing, just 3 bites, you will go back later, so don't overdo it right from the beginning. This is important - don't finish anything that isn't GREAT. Life's too short to eat crappy food. If you don't love it, don't eat it. After you've tried your 3 bites of whatever you wanted (and hopefully didn't finish all of it, there has to be something you didn't like, right? Be picky.), then you go back for a little bit more of your two or three favorite things. I said a LITTLE. This works for me every time and I feel so much better when I have to face a buffet these days.

I think a lot of people are sugar coating things

you're on a diet aren't you?! you want to lose weight and get fit and be healthy right!? think about those things before you reach for your third portion of fried chicken. buffets shouldn't be thought of a time to binge, maybe just a time to dabble in things you've not tried before.

The thing is when were at home we can over eat just as easily at home as at a buffet. We over eat at the buffet, not at home. Because we have to get our moneys worth. We have to get over getting our moneys worth & eat everywhere the same.

Thats the thing. By overindulging, one is NOT getting their money's worth. The miniscule financial gain is far outweighed by the reprocussions, such as time and effort that must then be spent to shed the excess calories that have done nothing in additional nourishment to the body.

Hi Chip

I know it's finished but just wanted to add my 2 cents. You have lost an amzing 69lbs., I think you've got the diet thing under control. In your situation I would say go and enjoy with control and 2300 calories to eat you'd be fine. Besides one buffet would'nt make you gain weight. You know what they say;

"It's not what you eat between Christmas and New Year's, it's what you eat between New Year's and Christmas!!

I THINK YOU MADE SOME WISE AND PREPARED CHOICES- CONGRATULATIONS!!:)
