the past 5 weeks so far I have been walking on the treadmill, using the stationary bike and just started the elliptical machine. In about 2 weeks I want to start doing strength training on Tues and Thursdays. What kind of weight lifting machines is good to start out on? I want to work on my problem areas, which are my arms, legs, belly and my chest area is the hardest to lose weight.

This isn't an area I know a great deal about, but I've had a lot of success working from a program I developed from this template: Weight Training Workout Templates For weight training that little, you probably want a fully body workout rather than a split.

free weights are usually best even for a beginner but you need to remember that you can't spot reduce those problem areas and strengthening those problem areas more than others will lead to muscle imbalance and injury over time.

It is difficult to make specific machine suggestions as most gyms will have different machines but as amy said a foll body routine would be the way to go if your training only 2 days per week. The biggest thing to remember is to choose 1 exercise for each major muscle (or group of muscles) in the body. there are usually 2 muscles at least which move a joint one to extend the joint and one to flex it. both must be worked to keep muscle balance to avoid injury to that joint. eg if you use an exercise to work the bicep then you need to also work the tricep. in a full body routine this will all be on the same day if a split routine is used then it may be on different days.

the site amy is referring you to is very good.
