They aren't unhealthy, actually they are very necessary
There are 3 basic macronutrients in foods :
1. Protein
2. Carbohydrates
3. Fats
Carbohydrates provide fuel for your body to function. Simple carbs (sugars) give a quick boost of energy that doesn't last very long. Too much sugar is easily stored as fat. Complex carbs (starchy veggies, pastas etc.) are very slow burning and provide energy for a longer period of time. Most people on the Atkins or similar plans think if they extremely limit their carb intake that they can rely on their body to tap into fat stores to provide energy. I personally believe that it happens, but your body also sacrifices muscle.
