What am I doing wrong???

Hello everyone.

I am 26 years old and weigh about 242lbs (5'10"). For the past two weeks I've been going to the gym 5 days out of the 7 and have been doing about an hour of cardio (burn about 1,100 calories on average) and about 30 minutes of light lifting.

As far as intake on calories, I am consuming a little under 2,000 each day. I will admit that I don't eat 6 light meals a day (between school and work it's hard) so I usually just do breakfast/lunch/dinner.

Breakfast is usually a slimfast shake. Lunch consists of grilled chicken breast in a tortilla with a little ranch and cheese, and usually a small serving of baked chips and salsa. Dinner is usually a balance between grilled chicken breast or lean hamburger meat.

It's been two weeks, and I haven't lost a pound. It's very discouraging! This past week I've decided to up my water intake, and have been trying to consume approx 160oz of water a day. The only change here is that I have been getting some monster headaches.

Anyone out there wanna shed some advice for me?

what makes you think you are putting up that number?

How are you keeping track of your calories, and how are you measuring portions?

I will use the eliptical machine for an hour (sometimes move over to a treadmill for 20 minutes afterwards). The machine asks for my age, weight, and monitors my heart rate and then keeps track of calories burned, so I assume it is some what accurate.

The Slimfast is about 200 calories (or a tad less) per can. She was pretty clear about the other meals and it is highly unlikely, even if she had huge portions, that she is getting more than the 2000 calories she says. While it is doubtful that she is burning 1000 cals on the machine, an hour long workout should be burning something..

What were you eating BEFORE this diet and what were you doing for exercise?

Well I've been in school the past year and gained about 25lbs by eating fast food almost every day and not exercising what so ever.

Before I was drinking about maybe 60oz of water a day...could the extra 100oz be throwing off my body right now?

might want to give it time.2 weeks isnt that long yet, and if its your time of month then it will definatly skew things as well as water weight.

Wow, congrats on cutting down on the fast food. Scary how much you can gain from eating it..

I am not a doctor but it just seems unlikely the lack of weight loss is due to the water drinking..

I can imagine how discouraged you must be as I have also had difficulty losing. If I was in your shoes I would carefully track the calories on fitday.com or in a notebook, and also track all exercise, and then if still nothing happens after a month of doing this, to take the info to a doctor and have your thyroid and other things checked.

I think what mal and Steve were getting at is: are you sure you're getting the calories you say you are? It sounds like you are but make sure you're accurately counting your calories. I have a wonderful food scale that is so easy, ya just throw a plate on it then set it to zero and then add things like say add the chicken, get the ounces, then set to zero and add the rice to get the ounces for that. Then plug the amounts into fitday.com to get the total calories.

Keep it up as going back to fast food and continuing to gain is certainly not an option either. Best of luck!

Kick-start your weight loss

You are obviously trying hard to lose weight. But here are a couple of suggestions that might help.

Research is increasingly showing that the best exercise for weight loss is interval training. That is, short intense sessions of aerobic exercise interspersed with rest periods. The long duration moderate-intensity workouts that you are doing do burn more fat DURING the exercise period, but interval training raises your metabolic rate more so that you burn more calories overall during the day. (Lengthy moderate-intensity workouts may actually encourage your body to store fat - I have an explaination for this on my website if you are interested)

While you need to shorten and intensify your aerobic sessions you need to beef up your strength training sessions. To build muscle (very good for fat burning because muscle is a very metabolically active tissue) you want to lift heavy weights - you want to bring your muscles to the point of fatigue, where you feel you couldn't do one more repitition. Be sure to only do this every other day though so your muscles can recover.

In the food area, protein has been shown to increase satiety and to actually burn fat. So I recommend eating high quality animal protein at every meal. In addition to the protein, fill up on veges and fruits. And if you can tolerate milk -and apparently you can since you eat cheese - dairy products have been shown to facilitate weight loss, so add in some yogurt or a glass of milk. Dump the chips (baked or not) and other high carbohydrate foods.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like you should stick to medicine if you ask me.

And stop spamming.

weight loss challenge

Don't be discouraged. The body is a complicated thing but exercise is a good start. Losing inches is more important than losing pounds, which is why after many years of trial and error I was thrilled to celebrate the most simple, effective, and sustainable 'fat loss' product, which really helps to support metabolism, burning mostly fat and maintaining lean muscle. There is a lot to say about most diets and weight loss products, but one of the most important things to know is that they generally result in the loss of 50% fat and 50% muscle - you want to keep muscle! Check out RIDICULOUS SPAM and let me know if you are interested in trying it. Always happy to support and share experiences with anyone faced with weight and health challenges - 15 years of accumulated knowledge is worth sharing!

Love & Hope
