I rarely get side stitches when running, but I often get a "stitch" behind my collar bone and it's horribly uncomfortable, not to mention painful. Does anyone know what this is or why it's happening? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I used to experience side stitch just behind the inferior portion of my left ribs and in the clavicle/shoulder area. I'm no expert, but I believe the same nerve (phrenic?) is responsible for these pains. I got through these cramps by slowing down and sticking my fingers under my ribs and pushing up.
I used to always get the stitch on my right side i asked a few people and did some searches, and alot of studies foud that your breathing may have alot to do with it. When i ran i used to take short breaths but now i try to take full breaths as normal as possible and this has helped greatly. But like Jamay said putting pressure on it helps alleviate the pain.
