Weights benches - are they needed?

Hi all,

Pretty simple question (I think!). For doing weights routines that involve lying on your back on a bench, (i.e bench presses or chest presses with dumbells), is it ok to not bother with a bench and just do it on a mat on the floor, or does the bench give you support in a differnet way?

I live in a flat so I don't really have any space to put a bench up, but if I can carry on as I am doing without bothering I will do. I just don't know if this could do me more harm than good not using the propper equipment?
 
you won't be able to get as much range of motion on many exercises (like bench pressing) because it would require you to put your elbows through the floor.
