Weight training books for women

Hi there- any suggestions for weight training books targetted at women? I've been looking at various reviews but thought I'd ask on here.

If you find one that is for women only, I would skip over it. :)

Women and men should train the same.

^^ditto that^^

after spending hours in barnes and noble and borders trying to find a decent book, the books written for women are all about the pretty pink dumbbells (which are fine for a start but not for long term use) and seemed to be lacking in the big picture.

Steve had suggested to me a book called and the suggestion might very well have been to shut me up and make me go away and stop bothering him but the book is pretty good in level of detail - it's written for coaches to teach others how to lift - so if you're teaching yourself it kind of works -it doesn't cover a basic that I need (that i'm done whining about) but it does cover a lot.. and while the book could have used much better editing, the facts seem correct and it's easy to understand... I was looking for a book that gave the basics of technique and why i was doing something -and it seems to cover it...

Tony M suggests ing a bunch and it's a good read - in an entertaining style - but i didn't feel it was good for a beginner but i am beginning to think i'm just slower than most... it's worth looking at though...

Thanks Steve and Maleficent. I'll keep looking around.
And yeah, I'm not looking for something with those dingy little dumbbells- looking for something that is actual weight lifting. So I shall take your advice Steve and look at something not necessarily aimed at women.

there are soooo many books out there - it's really kind of overwhelming - and every book professes to be the greatest book ever written - and the last book you'll ever need... (yah right sure)

When looking, and i'm far from an expert on this, but from my own personal experience, look for books that don't focus on one single area (like perfect abs), and give a full body workout...

To each of you, what exactly are you looking for? Just how to execute the exercises. Or the "why you are doing these things."

A bit of both. The most important aspect for me is the "how to execute" part- something with illustrations and showing which muscles are being worked and where my hips, legs, etc should be. Suggested reps and sets would be good too. I don't need anything with diet information or cardio stuff (got that already).

Can't help you on books, but if you're looking for some good websites...
has a good information. The blog is interesting as well.

is a personal blog, but she includes tips and information that i find pretty helpful.
is a weight training forum for women who really weight train. Like, not just with those 5 pound weights during aeorobics class.

A great book I've found for teaching you the basic exercises (the very basic) is Weight Training for Dummies, they really go into detail and stress proper form to avoid injury and the book is very well illustrated. It also has a decent section explaining equipment purchase for home gyms.

As far as actual work out routines or the "why" of training, definitely look up some of the books Tony and Steve recommend.
