Weight loss without Cardio

Hi There,

I'm a 26 year old male weighing roughly 280 lbs at 6'1.

I broke my ankle a few years back and never did go to the dr's to get it checked out or anything it's healed on its own and is now not in condition. I cannot run or job, stairs agrivate my ankle and biking is really the only thing I can do which is fine.

Now, my question is has anyone lost a good amount of weight by lifting weights and eating healthy?

I know the more muscle mass you have the more your body natuarlly burn's calories, I was just wondering if anyone has acctually done this?

Thanks,

If you never went to the doc, how do you know you broke your ankle? I'm not doubting you... just curious, is all.

Secondly, if you really broke it, I'd consider physical therapy assuming you have decent health insurance. Try to regain as much use from it as you can... otherwise it can come back to bite you in your later years.

To answer your question though.... plenty of folks lose weight without doing cardio. There's nothing magical about cardio other than that it helps people maintain a calorie deficit.

Keeping it off after you lose it will be harder without cardio though. Significant weight loss leads to a reduction in metabolic rate and energy expenditure for most people... and cardio happens to be a great buffer for this negative adaptation.

That said... if you can bike... why not do it. It's a fine form of cardio. Also... high volume, light weight, low rest resistance training can also be a form of cardio.

Need to get creative.

From my own experience, I've found cardio to really be the kicker for weight loss. Not because of the number of calories more because it keeps me more focused on my goal. Weight lifting is great, but getting drenched in sweat after a 25 minute run is a great motivator to continue your weight loss journey as well as eat healthier. I love the satisfying endorphin rush I get after a nice hard run.

That's not to say you can't lose weight without cardio. Heck you can lose weight with diet alone. But I believe cardio is a very effective way to keep you in the calorie deficit that you need to lose weight.

Why don't you start with your healthy diet/weight training and if you are having success keep it up. If not, try to add some biking into there. Swimming could also be a good alternative, but I do not know as I don't know the state of your ankle.

Good luck

Try supersets or circuit training. They have a moderate increase in heart rate. You can also do a few minutes of bike, then several sets, then bike, then more sets. Do you have a YMCA with an indoor pool? Swimming is great too. That being said, go to the doc. I have chronic tendinitis in my ankle from a previous break and ligament rupture, so I wear a brace and that seems to be enough support even for running. If you can do it, have some imaging done to know exactly what you are dealing with, then you can train accordingly. My MRI told me what I needed to know to make decisions.

It is possible, but really hard
