Weight Loss with weights?

Hello!

I have read few blogs of people that have lost weight lifting weights, so... since soon it will be too cold here to go jogging everyday, I was thinking of joing the gym. But I am a bit concerned and confused about the lifting weight thing.
Someone says that you actually will lose weight faster, because you define and build the muscles. Someone else says it will not help at all.
Can you please tell what you think and what is your experience?

Lifting weights build muscle, and building muscle mass will give your metabolism a boost since your body uses more energy to maintain muscle than it does fat. Faster metabolism= faster weight loss.
