Weight loss with Knee and Back problems

I am just wondering what is the best way to lose weight with knee(both) and back problems. I am 350lb with knee problems, I can't walk much without pain and I have scoliosis with steel rods in my back. I am not very active due to pain, I am not on any pain pills since the pain is so much that they just don't work. I am not on a diet but I do tend to eat 1 to 2 times a day.

I do not have back troubles (yet), but I can very much relate to knee troubles; I've had surgery on both of my knees. I have found being on the cross trainer to be less difficult on my joints than I expected it to be, but the best thing is swimming. You are weightless in the water so it takes the stress off of your joints, but you're using your muscles to keep moving and if you move enough you work up a sweat and get out of breath. It's great exercise. I don't personally like to be in public in a swimsuit but as soon as I have the money to do so again I will start paying for a pool membership because it's really a perfect workout for me.

Good luck!

I have arthritis in my feet, hands and knees, and chronic, extreme back pain. I have just stopped all pain medication since it is making me unable to function, so I can relate to your problem. I've started off at 370 lbs, am now at 325. You can do a lot with just healthy eating and calorie control, but I have to agree with the poster above me - try swimming if you can. It's the most gentle exercise, yet it actually gives you a better workout than being on the treadmill or similar things, because it's a full body exercise.
I personally can't get on the crosstrainer, I tried, and the pain was excruciating - but that comes down to what works for you personally. Swimming, definitely, with everything else - try it. If you can do it without pain, do it. If not, don't - exercise should get you out of breath and sweaty, but never cause you pain.

Taking into account your body weight and health issues, it very much important for you to lose weight. You need to follow a diet to reduce weight as well as go for some easy exercises like stretching exercises or low impact activities like walking, jogging or yoga. The exercises will help you in weight loss as well as reduce the pain and make the joints more flexible.

Thanks for everyone for replying to this thread. I started to count my calories at calorie counter and even shocked at how many calories are in coffee tt. thanks again

Sam, the calories can really sneak up on you, but the good thing is that now you know how many calories are in what you can figure out what to eat that will keep you sated, comfortable, and feeling full while still managing to lose weight :)
