Here is the best advice I can give - It's opinion, but it's also the basis of what has worked (and has been working!) for me:

First of all, I'm not selling or endorsing any product...

What worked for me; The best dietary advice I can give:

1. When seeking sustainable improvement, patience works far better than willpower
2. Setting goals (what to achieve, and a date to go along with it) didn't work
- I was happier and far more successful in tracking steady progress, without strong regard to the timing
3. Do research, experiment and scrutinize what you find when looking for what works for you. I've found that even "experts" can speak dogma.
4. Simple is easier! In the short term and long.

5. Add in other things to improve and make life more meaningful - It builds momentum and motivation, let alone makes life more enjoyable
- For me this was:
-- Decluttering - just about everything!
-- Learning how to savor - rather than consuming stuff
-- Building onto relationships - and there is power and enjoyment in surprises, both planned and spontaneous
-- Learning to take things as they come...
-- Always learning and trying something new
