Weight Loss Through Yoga?

Has anyone had any luck with losing weight with yoga? I just got a book and am going to start taking classes. I know it's good for stress relief and relaxation, but was also wondering if it will help me lose weight? I know it will probably tone some muscles and all.... but I really need to lose that fat!

When I did yoga in the past it was relaxing but didn't burn the calories for me. I plan to start doing yoga again when I lose my excess weight and need to just 'maintain'. I believe there are some cardio-type yoga videos out there, but I'm worried about pulling a muscle trying to do deep stretching while doing cardio.

Most yoga classes will help you shed pounds because yoga is about resistence and balance. You'll be using muscles you never knew you had! I also recommend going to a few classes before starting a yoga tape, most of the time the pounds don't shed off because you don't have proper form.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice and info. I'm so glad to have found a place where people share stories instead of just telling you what you should do. It makes this so much easier and less daunting. I will start the classes as soon as I move, so hopefully in the next two weeks.

I got into yoga a few years back and lost a lot of weight. But not through just hatha yoga (or whichever type of yoga you may be going to try), but through the whole lifestyle. Eating wholesome foods and meditating are just a few other parts of a "yoga" lifestyle.

I lost about 10 pounds by spending 2 weeks at an ashram (went from 137/138 down to 129/130), where I basically lived a yoga-life and felt the best I've ever felt. Wholegrain foods, nothing processed at all, and daily meditations with one hour hatha yoga sessions- it was hard for the first few days but wow, when i got home and got on the scale I was amazed that I had lost weight without even trying or thinking about it.

That said, taking yoga classes or just trying yoga at home can only benefit you and help you lose weight. At least, it did for me.
Also, there are some awesome dvds/videos for doing a 20/30 minute "workout" in your home- I used to do this Yoga in the AM first thing in the morning and found it was so refreshing and it got my body moving for the day.

I just started Yoga and I love it! At first I was very skeptical because I thought "All this is going to be is stretching and really how hard can this be", but after about 10 minutes I was sweating my buns off! If you really concentrate on using the correct muscles and holding those positions, you will feel it the next day.
