My 20 year old boyfriend is 5'11" and over the past 2 years he has gone from 13st 5lbs to his current weight which is 10st 2lbs. This has not been achieved via exercise so we are worried of what caused this. He first began losing weight the year before moving to university. Since at university he has continued to lose weight due to a change in diet (less meals more snacks), however when we had the same diet I was putting on weight whilst he was losing it. The exercise he does do is walking, his everyday diet would include the following:

(Breakfast would be around midday to 1/2pm)
Chocolate bar
Can of coke

(Lunch 3/4pm)
Rustlers chicken burger or sandwich/wrap from shop or pizza
Can of coke
Chocolate bar

(Dinner 9/10pm )
Pizza or Spaghetti Bolognese/ pasta dish or some kind of takeaway
Can of coke
Crisps

(Snacks & Drinks)
2x Can coke
Chocolate yogart snack
Chocolate bar

Any advice to how to gain weight or what could have caused the weight loss (whether it's his diet alone or other possible factors!). Thank you!

Hello Poppy.

You’re right to be concerned about your boyfriend’s alarming weight loss, particularly since his diet is incredibly unhealthy. Upon such a diet, so heavily laden with sugar, you’re correct in stating weight gain should be expected, not the opposite.

In all honesty, Poppy, if your boyfriend hasn’t visited his doctor so that tests can be under-taken, I’d recommend that you encourage him to make an appointment, since he may be suffering from an unknown medical condition, such as type I diabetes or hyperthyroidism.

He most certainly needs to change his unhealthy eating habits, Poppy, by eliminating as much refined carbohydrate from his diet as possible, replacing it with lean protein, complex carbohydrate, vegetables and healthy fats. In addition to implementing those changes, by under-taking a health check, to identify any health conditions, hopefully you’ll both be better placed in understanding the reasons behind his repeated weight loss.
