Weight lifting without a spotter?

I'm always intimidated to do my max weight lifting without a spotter because I'm afraid I will get tired, won't be able to finish my rep and embarrass myself. Anyone else had this kind of issue? How did you deal with it?

Kind of like this

You mean like a one-rep max (ORM)? Or you're wary of pushing out those last couple reps during a working set because you don't know if you can without a spot?

ORM is something I wouldn't play with very often unless you need to. If you are trying pursue progress regarding power-lifting then, yes, it makes sense. Most other cases there's not much point in my opinion.

To make size progress or even normal strength gains you don't necessarily need to float around your max numbers either. It's about stimulation not about what you're lifting. You should be able to stimulate the muscle to grow efficiently without venturing in to reps that worry you.

So to answer your question better I guess I should ask what are you specific goals regarding resistance training? You want to add size? strength? flexibility? functionality?

I'm talking about giving 100% in a set. Not doing ORM but just actually lifting a weight that will get me tired after a set.

I'm after strength building and toning, not really weight gain.

Goofy regardless of goals the last couple of reps should be challenging.

snezy this is why I don't train at home and always ask gym staff for a spot when training at the gym, If it is only the smaller staff members then 2 or three will spot if I am in the later stages of a training cycle the other option for me is to ask one of the larger members who I trust to spot.

it should not be embarrassing to fail, it is only embarrassing if you have done something stupid (eg. video).

In competition or some gyms the bench used has safety bars which should be set just below chest height but above neck height so the even if the spotters fail your not going to be crushed.

as for the video, poor grip choice, poor spotting technique etc......

The best workouts I've had were ones where I would go with a buddy and we could really push each other and feel confident that we could give 100% without the risk of an accident/embarrassment.

I guess I could ask some of the staff members for a spot, or maybe just some random people there. I guess best case scenario I find myself a workout buddy that goes to the gym the same time I do :p.
