Weight "gain" and exercise?

Don't know if this topic belongs on this site so if it doesn't then can any one of you Admins/Mods please remove it with my apologies, thanks. Reason I am creating this thread is because my son needs to increase his weight and he will be doing the opposite of what we do here so I figure that this forum might be able to help?
He just turned 17, is 6' 150 lbs right now and a High School Senior and is a Football Quarterback. I need him to gain around 50lbs by next June when he will be attending Football camps at the Colleges of his choice. He is not really skinny, he is very well built, athletic and strong, has been lifting weights for 3 years now but he is considered skinny by Football standards hence the reason for him to put on more meat. I never had him on a weight gain routine and only concentrated on conditioning and strength where weight training is concerned.
I will change up his routine from December when Football season is finished for this year and will put him on a mass building weightlifting program so what I need really is to cover the "nutrition" side of things. I've been told that he needs to consume 3500 more calories than his daily needs and also that he should drink a weight gain formula or protein shake just before lifting, can anyone confirm this please or can anyone give me any tips/advice that will my son gain the 50 lbs he needs by next June? Thanks.

i'm sorry i cant help you on this one. hopefully cdnboy will answer because he knows about this stuff!

yup, you have been given good advice. He needs to eat a lot and i recommend at least 2 shakes a day. A small one about 30 minutes before working out and another directly after. Every meal should contain a high amount of protein ... but that doesn't mean that it has to be meat. Cottege cheese, for example, is a great source. Adding blue berries to the shakes is also another added source. But for some really good advice, check out our sister forum www.fitness.com/forum/ ... it's much more geared towards weight gaining and we have some really good personal trainers on there.

I will get him the Weight gain powder. When on school vacation, we workout together at home so it's no problem there but the problem I see with this is that during school time, he works out with the Football team "in school" so I don't know how he will be able to take the protein shakes before and after workouts each day, any ideas/tips? Thanks.

p.s. Does anyone on this forum either live in Connecticut or are familiar with it's surrounding or lifestyle? Reason I'm asking is, I am thinking of moving there and would like to get feedback on that area? Thanks.
