weighing in

can anyone tell me how often is a good idea to weigh in? i've heard that weighing in everday can be a good motivator because knowing you'll be stepping on the scale each morning keeps it fresh and helps you make good choices, but on the flipside, i've heard that weighing in everyday encourages things like eating and compulsive exercise disorders. i'm sure that in the end it is a personal preference thing, i was just wondering what everyone else thinks and how it works for them. thanks so much!!
 
There are a bunch ofthreads here on this topic... and really the answer is - do what works best for you - but remember what shows up on the scale is ONLY a number, don't obsess over it and don't let it control your mood for the day.

Be sure to take measurements regularly as that will give a more accurate assessment of how you are doing. as well as what you are seeing in the mirror...
 
wow tomo, that is kinda obsessive. i have to be careful about obsessing. i have a serious history of eating disorders and some other emotional problems (read obsessive compulsive disorder/bipolar) all over my family. my aunt has just recently come back (well sort of) from anorexia and i'm terrified of ending up the way she was. when she got started she was much heavier than i am (her over 250 me about 175) but she ended up under 100lbs which is just ridiculous and scary. i've decided weighing in everyday probably isn't the best idea for me. i don't wanna step on the scale and see and increase or just not a decrease and start thinking "maybe i should skip breakfast" or anything like that.
 
I personally record what I weigh every week. However, I'm so curious that every time I walk into the bathroom I just have to get on the scale and see what it says. I try to keep in mind the daily weight fluctuations and it will generally not bug me if it goes up or down or whatever during the day, I only really pay attention to my weekly measurements.

I've also found its important to consider your body fat % more than your weight too. It's no good to lose weight if you're losing lean mass. I'd suggest taking other measurements when you weigh so you don't get too obsessive over that scale (if you're worried about it).
