weekend strategies???

Beach weekend & Dieting

Hi All! How was everyone’s weekend? Great I hope. Mine was fantastic. My mother came and visited for the weekend. It’s been a while. She showed up on Saturday, and we went to the Provincial Park near my place (I live right on the edge of the ocean, and have a great view), along with my son of course. We combed the beach for hours, brought home a feast of mussels for supper. Man were they good. Then on Sunday we went in the other direction, and explored another beach, and of course had to scale a rock cliff (had a lovely flounder supper that night). My calves are now killing me! It was beautiful all weekend, and I collected pockets full of rocks, geodes, quartz, amythest, and more! There are a lot of interesting rocks and minerals around here if you’re into that sort of thing. You may be asking if I stuck to my diet plan, well of course. I had my protein shakes for breakfast, took them premixed for lunch (snacked on fruits and vegees all day, and my plan allows me to eat whatever I want for supper, and still lose, so I enjoyed seafood!). It was great. I finally started working out again last week, the metabolism boosters I take really help, and I’ve lost enough weight now I felt comfortable getting back on the treadmill (it felt great). But it certainly isn’t helping how my calves are feeling now!! I guess no pain no loss!!!! I know, I’m no comedian. So how was everyone else’s weekend?

Weekend Survival Guide
Stay Healthy and Still Have Fun!
-- By Jen Mueller, Certified Personal Trainer

Can you relate to this desperate dieter’s dilemma?

“I'm pretty good about my diet and exercise program during the week. But when the weekend comes, all of that hard work goes out the window! I constantly find myself ‘starting over’ every Monday morning. How do I get out of this unproductive cycle?!”

One reason weekends are so difficult is that you fall out of your regular daily routines. There are always potlucks, dinners, dates and family gatherings, where trouble is lurking in the form of buffet lines or rich desserts. Weekend menus can also be more difficult to plan - and without a plan, you're more likely to stray from the healthy habits you have been working so hard to develop.

The “Weekend Survival Guide” is designed to help your diet survive those dreaded weekends. Keep it with you - in your purse, in the car - wherever you go. The checklist and helpful tips can keep you focused and on track. Meanwhile, the inspirational quotes can give you a boost of well-timed motivation. If nothing else, remember this: when you start feeling the temptation to slip, ask yourself how you will feel about your decisions once Monday morning rolls around.

TIPS FOR TURNING AWAY TEMPTATION
  • Plan family activities like bike rides or outdoor games. This helps you spend time with your family and burn calories all at once!
  • Carry a water bottle with you to your weekend activities. This will help you get your water for the day and resist the temptation to reach for a soda or other caffeinated beverage.
  • Set some "weekend specific" goals for yourself based on the realities of what you’ll be doing. They may look very different than your weekday goals, and that’s okay.
  • If you are going to be out all day, pack some healthy snacks in case you get hungry. There is nothing worse than being hungry at the mall, and the only food options are ice cream or pizza.
  • Set Monday as your weigh-in day. You are more likely to resist temptation if you have to face the scale first thing Monday morning.
  • Plan ahead!! If you are going out to eat, find the restaurant's menu (and any available nutritional information) online. You’ll have plenty of time to make a healthy choice before you get there.
  • Don't save all of your splurging for the weekends. Allowing yourself a few treats throughout the week will help you avoid the mindset that the weekend is an excuse to go bonkers. And by spacing your treats evenly, you're less likely to get sudden, irresistible cravings.

With a little extra effort and planning, you can turn weekends into an enjoyable experience and an opportunity to keep your program moving in the right direction!

I dont work office hours so weekends arent anything special to me. A good link though.

The only reason a weekend might mean sinning for me is if I go on a night out and am tempted towards a drink or two. (or ten :()

I think my biggest temptation comes at work, when meals are given to the staff. People keep plating me up lunch/dinner or at least offering it, and I have to say no and sit and watch the rest eat it. Painful lol. (This is how I ended up eating 4 roast potatoes last night. ;))

weekends are sometimes the hardest days for me, so i was wondering what everyone does or will do to keep on track. i'd love to hear all suggestions and what's worked for you.

oh yeah - have a great weekend :)

I still haven't figured out the weekends. I have a very nice routine down on the weekdays, but everything is thrown out of wack on the weekends. I constantly feel like eating on the weekends, so what I've done so far is try to snack on healthy things...carrots and hummus, whole grain crackers, low fat popcorn and A LOT of water. That was working pretty good for me until last weekend, when I ate way too much crap. I think I need to stay busier. Oh well. I can't wait to see other people's responses.

Weekend Anxiety!

 The weekends are the absolute worse when you are really trying to discipline and now with the holidays approaching its like everyone wants to go out for dinner and drinks... a lot of these place have a diet menus but does everyone agree with me when I say ick! LOL

Have a Plan!

Hi there.
Have a plan of attack!
I relate to your stressful weekends.
I survived two restaurant outings last weekend by sticking to big chef salads with low fat dressing and lots of water.
I concentrated on ME and NOT what those around me were eating.
I also said this to myself, "Eat right, drink right, and imagine smiling before going to bed tonight knowing you did well." It worked for me.
Perhaps cook a small meal before you leave so you are full and perhaps eat a small salad when you go out.
You can do it. If I can do it, you can too.

Ryan

What seems to work for me is I allow extra calories on weekeneds- Normally I stick to 1600 a day but on weekeneds I give myself 1800 and it really seems to work , knowing I get an extra treat or two and I haven't overeaten on a weekend since.

I like that Ryan. Personally I don't eat in restaurants much these days, but there are many times when "imagine smiling before going to bed tonight knowing you did well" will be a help to me, especially in situations involving special or unusual temptations.

I look at the menu of the restaurant online so that I can completely plan out what I'm going to eat. It takes the shock value out of finding out that you totally blew your calories for the day on a 1500 calorie salad.

I find that the salads in most trendy restaurants have more calories than 'the bad food'. It's crazy!

I just forgive myself...

and eat pretty much what I want on the weekends. I follow my diet during the week and eat my goodies on the weekends. I try not to overdo it. I pretty much eat healthily during regular meals and stuff, but if I want something sinful, I will have it guilt-free :D

I came to the conculution to my weekend woe's stay away
from family members house lol they always have bad food
and snacks at the card parties! I did do good 1 weekend by
taking a couple of my healthy snacks so when they started
munching I can to just on healthier choices.Tammy:)

On the weekend I just try to continue to eat healthy. I do save one night, usually Saturday night, to take my girlfriend out or to hang out with my friends. I try not to drink too much or to eat anything bad. But I know that if I don't do this once a week night out, I will go crazy staying in. Or will make my girlfriend bored by never taking her out for a night on the town.

Anyways, I just make sure I don't over do it. I can deal with weekends; my hard time is on vacations.

Ive become a hermit to avoid it all lol ... probably not the answer. Thanks for the advice!!!
