I dont get it. About 2 weeks ago i went on an 11 mile bike ride, i took a while but i did it.

Today i went on a bike ride again but only went about 6 miles in total and i was so warn out afterwards! What good is cardio if you can hardly do any?

I think the guys at the body building forum are right when they say cycling wont make your legs any stronger. I guess i'll somehow have to do some weight exercises and make my legs stronger before i do cardio again. Well annoyed!

Your feeling of being worn out could be from a lot of things a not that your legs are strong enough to do the miles again. maybe you did not have enough protien the second time. Be careful going to weight building sites those guys are only into build muscle not a healthy body. Not to say lifting weights isn't an improtant part of healthy living. cardio is more soo. Good luck riding.

You will always have good and bad days. There are many variables involved but some that may effect the session are:sleep patterns, eating/energy, route (flat/hilly), headwind, temperature.

As far as leg strength goes, it depends on what you want it for. Cycling will never build enough strength to leg press 1000lb, but you can certainly gain enough to conquer just about any hill.

Also, never ever take advice from bodybuilders when it comes to cardio!

I agree. Think about the time you did 11 miles...did you eat before that? did you sleep well the night before? was it in the morning etc...

Somedays I'm fantastic with cardio other days I suck....it's the day.

Doing weights DEFINATLY helps the cycling. I knocked 20 mins of a hill climb i do from work. Used to take me an hour to do it :D

I do both - why limit yourself? :)

Ok i will do both, cycling uses the quads most right? I know some calve exercises to.

I have a pretty lame memory. I can remember that it was on a Sunday, and i probably had either two Weetabix for breakfast or some grilled rhindless bacon. One of those, not sure which though. Pretty sure thats all i had that day until i got back from the bike ride.
What happens though is if i really push myself on the bike my quads feel loads of pain from the stress im putting them thru. Simply put, they are not strong enough.

I find that you have to work through that pain and then it will go away. About 10 minutes into cycling my thighs are burning but I push through it and then the feeling goes away---It might just be your legs stretching out.

Cycling uses most of your leg muscles so you will need to do.
Squats (holding some weight and squating down and then up again repeatedly)
Leg Press (this is like squats)
Walking Lunges
Calf raises

If you are unsure what these are go here

Also it uses your upper body arms and back muscles to stablize and so forearms and shoulders get a fair workout cycling, probably dont have to exercise those just yet though :)
